I have a HP Pavilion ze5200 laptop and I want to connect an external monitor to this, so that either both monitors are showing the display OR the external monitor only. The monitor is Compaq V1100 19", at the moment when I connect the laptop with the external monitor, all I get on the external is the windows XP logo with a blue background and the laptop screen displays as normal...

..In other words the external monitor won't display what the laptop will!!

I have gone into the display settings and the laptop does recognise the external monitor and I get both monitors to display between monitor "1" and "2"...but still cant get the external monitor to display.

I thought you could just plug it in and it would display but no..

Where am I going wrong and what needs to be done...do I need a driver???

You have extend my desktop switched on.
go to Display properties and select "2" and uncheck the tickbox for "Extend......."

Hold the "fn" key which is located bottom left of keyboard and press F5 once and let go. Anything? If not, hold fn again and press F5 twice. Let go. Keep on cycling through the fn/F5 key until you get the desired display.

Is that not just for for changing between:
    1)Laptop display only
    2)Laptop & external
    3)External
