Can anyone recommend a printer that prints photos at a high quality finish that looks as though they've been developed professionally. Of course ink prices would be an issue, so ideally they aren't extortionate. Could anyone help me? :)

I personally bought myself the IP4000 from Canon and have to say the printouts are amazing, very fast, extremely quiet, can print Duplex, also directly to CD.
and it should be going pretty cheap now as canon have announced the next gen version of it.
have seperate cartridges too, so you don't waste and ink when only one colour is empty.

Thanks for that, I'll have a look into it.

i have an olympus P10 and it prints exact photo quality photos by using dye sublimination (sp?)
perfect for me aswell as you can plug the camera straight into the printer.

Espon R300 is excellent too - print directly from camera and onto CD's. Excellent quality photos and separate cartridges at €17 each.

Or r200 is a cheaper option r200=r300 - memory card reader

Thanks, which do I go for. They all look very good. getting great reviews. Very reasonably priced aswell. Suppose ink price is the deciding factor now.

I'd go for Epson every time.

You can get the R300 with the preview screen for €199.

Plus the R300 is fairly economical on ink. It uses 6 seperate cartridges (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black, Light Cyan and Light Magenta) all priced around the €16 mark. You can buy a 6-pack with all of the inks for about €63 and certain stores, when you buy the printer off them, give you an ink discount card that gets you 10% off ink for the life of the printer.

    That's what I'd go for.

And I sell the things :)

Not asking you to advertise now, but where is the cheapest place to buy the Epson?

Well I work for Harvey Norman in Dundalk, so that's where I'm getting those prices.

Sorry if I'm seeming a bit dense, but the preview screen is that for when you put your memory card in, you know what you are printing? How much without that?

    I agree, I bought the R300, great photo's and great for CD/DVDs.

Ink though is a rip off. I printed some photo's on 10x15 Epson Premium Glossy paper with the Epson Ink set that came with the printer. Excellent print out. Bear in mind I am not a photo chap. Snaps of the kids etc only.

I have since switched to compatible ink cartridges. The same photos on the same paper ..look identical to my eyes.

I can get a FULL set of ink for my R300 ( 6 cartridges ) for less then 9 euros.

You can't go wrong with a cost of less then 9 Euros for the R200/R300 set of ink. I'm on my second set of this ink and it's great.

That's a great price...and there is no difference in print quality???? That is inclusive or VAT and everything. Unbelievable.

I'm no expert in relation to photo's, if you buy a set of the ink it's less then 15 Euros Inc. VAT and Shipping.

They are very quick with there shipping aswell. I bought online 2 sets of it there this monday and just now it's arrived in the office :)

I would seriously doubt that a full set of ink for 9 euros is going to be of the same quality as original Epson inks, which Epson guarantee not to fade for up to 70 years. I've tried replacement/third party inks for my R200 before and it's nowhere near the same quality - my photos have been losing their colour and fading - in a photo of my parents dog for example, the dog is now glowing bright red while the rest of the colours are fading to white.

bigmouth, you presume correctly about the preview screen. It's so you can see in full colour what's on your memory card. The version of the printer without the preview screen is retailing for €149.

Thanks Bard, and everyone for all your help. Looks like the r300 is the winner, probably go for the one without the preview screen though. Thanks so much!! :)

Bard has a point. I only have mine for a few months. Ye may need to give it a couple of years to see if the ink on the photo's start's to go awry.

Having said that ...as long as you still have the images and the cheap ink ..print again :p

More seriously, Bard is right ...you get what you pay for.

By the way, if you're looking for a portable printer to do 6x4 inch photos only, I can personally highly recommend the Epson Picturemate. It's was reduced from €249 to €218 and has now dropped further - down to €149!
