The best way to get your site to come up near the top however is to get it linked from other sites, the more popular those sites are the better.

If you download the Google Toolbar it'll tell you the page-ranks of any site. The higher the googlerank of the pages linking to you, the higher your page appears in the search engines. Try and get your site linked to from as many directories and sites as possible.

In terms of directories, the most important to be listed with is www.dmoz.org. It's the largest human edited directory in the world and feeds into most of the larger sites including the Google Directory service. It may take a couple of months but eventually your site will be fed into loads of other directories, many of which normally charge for inclusion ;)

There are some useful submission tools on some of the webmaster sites, a quick google should find a few of the free ones. Be sure you've got your sites meta tags up to scratch before doing that though!
