I dont know if this is the correct place to post this so mods move this if it needs to be moved.
But my mate bought a sony clie palmtop in the states about a year ago and its bust now. Im looking to get it repaired. How does this work? Does Sony warrentys cover ireland if you buy in the states? Also I see Sony dont repair directly, you have to go to a dealer. Is my best bet to bring it to a sony centre and ask them??

Also what type of warrenty do Sony give (1 year, 2 years etc)??

Any help appriciated. Thanks guys. Sorry if it isnt oin the wrong section

According to the support page if it was bought in the US it has to go back be repaired in the US after you register the product with an American address.

Warranty is typically 1 year. How broken is it? You could try your luck with a sony centre.

so basically: no american address, no repair  what about a canadian address? It was sat on for a whole nite, LOL so screen casing is cracked and it generally doesnt work :) . I suppose i could try a sony centre, see what they say. Anyone here work for sony and can get it sent off? :D

in general, you can call the EU hotline and they can deal with the repair, if the EU has the same model for sale, not meaning the ID as they are different, but the model itself.
the main issue will be that it will be deemed out of warranty, hence you are better off anyway buying a new PDA from the start.
Sony's most expensive components in the PDA are the outer casing and the LCD screen, each one will cost about 3/4 of the actual value of the PDA.
If they can't repair it here, they will give you an address and the number for the US support where you will have to ship it over to at your own cost.

I used to work for them, and tbh the support with them was a nightmare.

gilgamesh is right, they are a disaster, dont buy sony if u expect support thats all i can say.
my advice is throw it on ebay u might get 30 or 40 euro for it and buy a wel known one that parts are easy to get for like palm, or look for parts on ebay. sony repairs are ber (beyond economical repair)

Erm... 'sat on for a whole nite' is not the sort of damage a warranty protects against. Sony almost certainly aren't going to be bothered whether it was bought in the US/Europe if you are paying for the repair, but as pointed out a new one is likely to be more cost effective.

hehehe, i found out it was only the screen that didnt work, the touch screen wouldnt work, it can display just cant press anything, so i managed to source a screen through ebay for $35, should have it next week. I dont know if it is exactly the right screen, looks identical, but i decided just to take the chance anyway, even if it isnt its only about €25 i lost, not TOO bad :D

Actually, you're wrong: Sony EU will not entertain your query - even for a cost. The only support that can be obtained will be from Sony USA (You can always post it.. but TBH: physical damage cost + repairs.. it's beyond economical repair -flog it on eBay as suggested. Try posting on 1st source forums re: screen model for further help?).
