Connecting Laptop to TV to watch DVDs ?

I am trying to connect my laptop to my TV in order to watch DVDs etc that play on the computer.
Both the laptop and TV have ‘S’ inputs and when I connect an ‘S’ cable between them the TV works like a typical monitor however if I try to view a video file I just get a blank screen on Windows Media player or any other media application (there is no audio either)

The TV also has the Red, White and Yellow inputs.
In order to view video on the TV is it as simple as getting a cable with an ‘S’ connection on one end and Red, White and Yellow connections on the other end and running it between PC and TV ?.

S-Video to S-Video should work. I've used the TV out on my PC to display on the TV and, just like you, no video is displayed from WMP. It should work though as a friend on mine at work used to play XVids on his laptop to TV all the time and it worked fine. It's probably something to do with frame rate and resolution, but I never figured it out.

Sorry to not be of any help, I'm sure someone here has figured this one out though as I know it's possible. Would like to know myself too.

It is almost certainly a problem with your display driver - try setting it up so the laptop screen isn't active when the svideo cable is plugged in (there may be a keyboard shortcut for this, consult your manual)

S-video won't carry an audio signal, you need to plug something into the line out / headphone jack on your laptop for that.
