Home Network Problems

I've recently got broadband installed. I have a desktop PC (win 2000, soon to be MCE), laptop (xp home - Alpha) connected directly to the router and I have a laptop (xp home - Delta) and another laptop (xp pro - Gamma) connected wirelessly. They can all access the internet no problem.

I tried setting up a network last night so that all the machines could share files but I am having problems. I ran the MS network setup on each machine and created a workgroup called Home and these were my results.

Gamma laptop can see and access my desktop and Alpha. However it cannot see or ping Delta.

Delta can only see the name of the workgroup and no machines and it cannot ping any machine.

Not sure about Alpha as I just use it for storing files so it doesn't need to access the other machines!

Didn't do any testing with the desktop as it will be changed soon anyway.

Any ideas how to resolve this? I really need Delta (wireless, xp home) to see the other machines on the network.

(temporarily) Disconnect the internet. Disable ALL software firewalls (make sure windows' built in firewall is off). Then try to connect again. Let me know if that doesn't work, but it should. Its probably a software firewall issue.

Ok, I only disabled Sysgate personal firewall and not the windows one last night. I'll try that later tonight, have a few other things to do though so might not get a chance. If that works then is it possible to have my firewall turned on and be able to browse the machines on the network at the same time?

I'm not 100% familiar with XP home, but certainly with XP pro sometimes you cannot see a PC if you don't have anything shared on it. Have you a shared folder with full permission to the "Everyone" group?

Yeah, I shared out a folder on each machine to "everyone". Only gave them read permissions though, would this matter?

It shouldn't but stranger things have happened. Also, try giving them all an IP address. Start from something like 192.168.1.1 .... 192.168.1.2 .... etc etc, i've found in the past that a workgroup name just isn't enough and giving them all an IP address in the same range helps.

Yeah, I'll try that later witht the permissions. They all have the same range of addresses dynamically assigned by the router. Must check the router configuration, maybe there is something in there to prevent wireless devices from seeing each other!

try ipconfig /renew at a command prompt on delta, this will refresh the ip address with the router. From delta try and ping the router. If you can't ping then you are not going to be able to browse or share anything as the is no connectivity. Also, check that all systems are on the same subnet.
