Right, this has been annoying me. I've been trying to figure out which of these pedals was the "best" and It's a damn hard choice so I'm asking you good folks.

    Boss GT-8

    Line 6 Pod XT Live

    Vox Tonelab SE

Pricing aside, which one would you get and why?

    Which one? 18 votes

The boss gt8 sounds a good bit better than the other two. IMO of course, but only after trying all 3 side by side and putting my money where my mouth is...

I read reviews of all three before I finally decided on a GT-8. The Vox effects are not supposed to be great and the line 6 sounds more processed.

Where's the none of the above option? Honestly, I've no interest in multieffects, and if it was up to me, I'd get one or two effects pedals that I'd need, leave it at that and spend the rest on a new amp or such like. Aside from that, I've actually heard the Pod XT Live "Live" and it wouldn't be my thing, whereas I've used my guitar teacher's Boss GT-5 and while I wouldn't bother with one myself, I have to say it's better than the Pod, so I'd say the GT-8 is probably the way to go. The Vox Tonelab SE I've had no experience with at all, but I've heard people saying the the tube in it is pretty much just there for show.

The reason there is none is because I want want people's opinions on whether multieffects are good or not, I want to know which of the three is the one most people prefer.

The thing is Karl, the effects are grand, and it doesn't cost much more than getting 2-3 good quality effects. The Wah, Compressors, Distortions, Delay, Reverbs are all pretty good. Some of the pitch and harmony effects might sound a bit wierd on certain settings but if you learn how to make them work they sound pretty good.

Ah, but my thing is, I'd probably buy a single Behringer pedal for all the effects I'd use. €20? Grand... €444? Bloody 'ell!

gt-8 all the way fey...the pod is a bit to digital for my liking (kinda sounds like modelling rather that effectors afaik)...haven't really read much abou the vox but what i have seen its not great kinda poor quality on the mods...

gt-8 i would have the most experience of the 3 and its really good..i suppose it has the same basis as your me-50 as far as the quality of the effects and your like myself u like chorus and delay sounds so the gt-8 is spot on for that...the whammy is a bit crackly in the octave up position but its ok if u are not planning on leavin it in that position..of course then theres the dual cosm modelling system and of course slow gear(god i love slow gear )...yeah i reckon gt-8 bud!!!

I have voted for the GT-8 although I have a GT-6 which to me is quite good I am really happy wity the sound I am getting out of it at the moment. As far as I have read the GT- 8 is almost identical with some additional COSM features.

I mainly use the Amp sounds and try and get a fairly ballsy distortion from it "AC/DC" sound mainly and it comes pretty close to getting Angus's sound.

Also I have mentioned this before the 4 Cable method can't be done with the line 6. AFAIK. Correct me if I am wrong. The other guitarist in my band uses the Line 6 and although he is happy with it I don't think he has gotten to grips with all the parameters on it. The GT has a lot more space for saving your own patches. 36*4

I still haven't gotten to all the settings on the GT-6 either but I think the tone going through an amp is better from the boss, Through Headphones the Line 6 just edges it in my opinion although that is no good for Live work.

    My two cents :)

yeah 4 cable method is a big plus for the gt series also...i think its more or less unanimous

444 fecking euro? Feck that. What's the best multieffect pedal for under 100 euro? (If there any for under 100). Sorry to hijack your thread but I think you got the answer you were after.

Yeah, but 2-3 good quality effects will leave your guitar tone intact.

If someone put a gun to my head and told me to use a multieffects pedal I'd take the Pod. But otherwise I wouldn't touch them with a ten-foot pole.

They do take alot of setting up, I noticed when switching from straight into the amp and through the pedal you got some tone suckage. Messing with the EQ, Input and output levels sorted that out. The only **** effects on it are the gimmick ones. I've used indvidual effects and some of them are ass. The DM-3 sounded kinda crappy and the MXR pedals I've used were horrible. I also hate the DS-1.

These effects going through a nice tube amp really do sound good. It's a balance, if you overload a patch with effects of course your going to get signal degradation, For what I use it for, it's fine. I mostly use the distortions on my amp, and use the boost on the pedal. The chorus split into two amps sounds sweet, the delays are pretty good, but some sound a little crap, you hear some high pitched crap in the background so you have to filter those out.

I think alot of the problems people have with multieffect units is their inabilty to use them properly. Same for guitars and amps really.

tbh gib i'd say feylya has it in mind to get one of these and he'd have no bothers setting up his tone on it...thats why he started the thread (subtle bugger)...i found the gt-6 really easy to use i have to say but i did have a ge-7 with it for my eq ;)...delays are unbelievably hard to capture but i wouldn't fault the gt on that i never really got any unwanted feedback but then agin i wasn't using an ENGL (lucky bastard)

i prefer subtle as an air raid...rolls off the tounge nicer:p...woul u not consider gmajor fey??

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

A G-Major would be too expensive and quite limiting... I want to be able to use the 4 cable method and want to use a combination of distortions from the effects board and the amp. It might be a while til I get it anyway, so there's no point nit picking.

One of the reasons why I posted this thread was because I was asked to choose between the three and my brain started melting.

yeah your right i miss distortion on my effects unit big time..what are u thinkin now betwwen the 3 of em???

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

I was leaning towards the GT-8, cos of it's effects loop, it's dual cosm engine and it's amp switching capability but the Pod has the usb port for recording and the Vox is supposed to be incredible. If it's like the Valvetronix amp, it's really good. It's a tough one.

it is i was using a valvetronix in the studio last night and i was really impressed i have to say...only for i'm nt in the market for an amp anymore i'd seriously consider it...does the gt-8 have midi yeah??? any waya u cuold try em all out

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

I'll just have to try them out in Dublin whenever I'm up there next. Who knows, maybe they'll have them at this music expo in the RDS :p

Yeah, it has midi and digital out. Wonder could I hook up a Whammy to it and control it with the GT-8 pedal...

You might be able to actually!

    Line 6 Pod XT Live
i'm sure u could but then again are gettin into gmajor price ranges then aren't u??? the whammy on that isn't horific by any means anyway...just a bit crackly sometmes...it'd be sweet if they had them at the rds...watch we'll go up and they'll have a squire strat and a load of arion pedals thru an mg or somethin :p

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

I'm just wondering now... The GT-8 has midi on it (I was reading the manual last night) so you could use that as a controller for your rack... Hmmm *strokes chin*

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

well having a gt-6 and loving it kinda makes me biased... but i do think that boss make fantastic individual pedals... and they carry them across to the multieffects unit quite successfully without losing quality.... so my money would definitely be on the boss

Anyone have any experience of the zoom gfx-4? There's one going for 130 2nd hand. Good deal?

You can't make up lost signal with EQ and gain. If you're using a multieffects pedal in front of a valve amp you might as well have a solidstate preamp in it, tbh.
