I'd go with Debian for ease of management and ease of not installing X by accident.
Gentoo might give you a tighter memory footprint which you'd really notice with 80M RAM.

Have you considered OpenBSD? On a machine of that weight, it tends to run a little better than a heavy linux distro.

Ubuntu has a "server install" which doesn't bother with X at all. It's /very/ lightweight though. You even have to install sshd (though it does come with apt-get).

    I haven't tried it, but perhaps Vector Linux ( http://www.vectorlinux.com/ )?

It's supposed to be quite snappy, even on old systems. It quotes 16MB of RAM/175MB of HDD as its minimum footprint too :)

Alternatively, you could try Gentoo, but you may need a few gigabytes of hard disk space to manage the portage tree and all that stuff... then of course there'll be a few days of solid compiling if you want to optimise it for your box...

Though, as you said, there's nothing wrong with a BSD either... have only tinkered with FreeBSD myself, but it seems fine... the ports collection is pretty good too.

Then again, I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than I will come along with something more closely approximating wisdom...
