Computer acting strangely

I'm not sure quite what has gone wrong with my computer. Yesterday when I turned it on and after it had fully loaded, I notice in the top left hand corner of the screen that there was little flashs of white marks (very tiny lines of white) scribbling in the corner of the screen. Also my cursor was stuck on the pointer-with-small hourglass, only the hourglass kept flashing really quickley. It is still happening today.

I've run Norton anti-virus to check if it's some sort of virus but it came up clean so I don't know what to do. Could it just be a malfunction which I'll have to bring my computer into a store to get fixed? It's a fairly new computer, about a year and a half old and it runs on windows XP home edition.

I'd appreciate any help or suggestions.

    Thanks.

it could be dead pixels on your monitor. Is it only on the desktop that you notice the white marks or is it when you open up programs also?

The fact that your cursor is staying at an hourglass rules out any hardware fault, so you're looking at some software conflict/fault.

    1. Never trust Norton. Download Panda AV and see if that comes up with anything.
    2. Sounds like something is starting up automatically on your computer which it doesn't like.
    3. Did you install a game recently, or a graphics upgrade?

Any changes you made recenty, undo them.

Well I haven't added anything to my computer recently except the scanner, which I did have turned on when I turned on the computer so maybe that was it, because today I turned the scanner off before turning on the computer and it's fine, the cursor and flashes have disappeared, so I'd say it was that.

    Thanks for your suggestions!

When you boot your comp press F8 and wait till an option screen appears. Select 'Start from last known good config'. That should fix most software conflicts. If that doesn't work try a sys restore to the last time you knew the comp worked. If that doesn't help then I'd suspect a virus is on the machine that Norton can't catch (Not that it catches anything really anyway)

As suggested Panda is a good solution (There online active scan is quite a good back up option) or AVG free (www.grisoft.com - I'd suggest you use that anyway to get rid of any trojans Norton will more than likely have let through).

From what your saying though it seems to be a software conflict of some kind. A prog is trying to load but is hanging during the proceedure hence the hr glass flashing as it is.
