Children of Bodom is probably the one I've been listening to the most lately, a great band altogether.

In fact I think I'm going to stick a bit of it on now.

I've been listening to Wintersun recently, and I must say they have some fantastic stuff. I only have their self titled album, but it has some excellent moments. Beautiful Death is probably my favourite song, but Winter Madness is a bit dodgy.

Black Metal is a joke these days. All the current bands are too busy trying to sound like Darkthrone, and are more interested in sucking Fenriz's cock and being "True" and "Oldschool" than actually doing anything interesting. It's in a pathetic state, with only Enslaved, Ulver and Arcturus are the only ones left doing anything interesting today. Anything that was original about the scene has been sucked dry, and the bands broken up. Emperor and Immortal are gone, Mayhem is a pathetic shadow of what they were when Euronymous was still alive, and Burzum hasn't done anything in ages, despite Varg still being mad as a fish, possibly even more so. And then we have Darkthrone, still talking **** and releasing the exact same album over and over again, year in year out.

I honestly can't stand when I read through Terrorizer and some idiotic Black Metal band is making some retarded statement about how their music is a plague (Honest to god, I did not make that one up) and they're all dressed up in their corpsepaint like it was still 1993.

Not really, besides Alexi's harsh vocal style it's more akin to Power Metal, or Melodic Death.
    Oh, Genres are fun. ;)

    agree
that norwigian black metal "era" is dead.
But good projects do exist anyway (dunno...nargaroth, leviathan, xasthur) especially one-man bands like judas iscariot. And those french guys Black Legions still playing somth and they dont try to sound like darkthrone. NSBM is still alive and has its strong position (know only eastern europe bands - nocturnal mortum, hate forest, drudkh, forest, raven dark etc...). And i suppose black/death is now developing into brutal unholy death (belphegor, black witchery)
ps Heard that Varg gonna make album when he is relealed (april of 2006 not sure). Gonna sound like his old albums - he said.

Meh, I've listened to a lot of other BM, can't say I like Judas Iscariot at all, Anaal Nathrakh did some interesting things, but nothing on the scale of the classic stuff. Some of the French stuff is good, like Antaes and Arkhon Infaustus, but nothing groundbreaking, and the whole NSBM thing I'm just not into at all, Graveland and Nocturnal Mortum suck, and I don't like any music that's a vehicle for someone's beliefs or political stance. So that rules out bands preaching about god, Iced Earth's preaching about the American way of life, and every National Socialist Black Metal band out there. When it's about promoting and pushing views, it stops being about the music.

Outside of the Norwegian scene, the best band by far would probably be Sigh, who've really done some interesting and experimental things altogether. Scenario IV: Dread Dreams is one hell of an album, as is Imaginary Sonicscape. Granted it's pretty far removed from the BM roots, but at least they're doing something new. Mithras aswell, although being primerally a Death Metal band, have a huge Emperor influence altogether. Definetly one of the best band around at the moment.

big fan of Children of Bodom. they rock! why do you term them "real metal"?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 69 ✭✭CISCOCERTIFIED

Listen to the majority of stuff they label metal these days, its MUCK !!! Alot is good, but majority is CRAP.

Children of Bodom kickin ass and there only kids especially when they brought the early/best stuff out.

Real Metal, thats what I'd call it.

Yes i know it is quite different and i think it is just crap now tbh.
I didn't like the old stuff that much but what there is now is just awful.

    Danke.

The problem is not that it's '"Not what it was" as such, but so many bands trying to make it like it was, and just churning out the same god-awful **** over and over again.

Like I said though, there's still some bands doing new and amazing things.

    Here's Enslaved:

NO pissant ****ing about with Corpsepaint, just sheer awesome music.

Well they were the ones who coined the term Black Metal, but they were always really a thrash band. I'd say Bathory were probably one of the first, if not the first band to lay down the sound of what is now know as Black Metal. Blood Fire Death would be a good album to check out.

Ahh yes COB. The new album is shaping up well ;)

But Karl's right about Enslaved paving the way forward for der brack metar. For me there's no topping Emperor in the realm of black, but Enslaved get a cookie for effort. New Exodus ROCKS too, better than last year's attempt even (no more gollum souza on vocals). To quote an earlier post (and save precious typing time):

Beneath The Massacre, Dripping, Dominance Through Impurity, Sleep Terror, Lykathea Aflame, Mithras, Arghoslent, Beheaded, Ion Dissonance, Ephel Duath,(if I can count them) MARTYR (of canada), Coprofago, Deeds of FLesh, Despised Icon, Kronos, Psychotogen, Harakiri, Sikth, Spawn of Possession, Psycroptic, The Red Chord, Vile, Wormed.... I could go on, but it would be pointless.

    Arghoslent = most original melo-death band since S-Club 7.
Wormed= experimental brutal death (essentially they make concept albums). Fun Fun.
Ephel Duath = weird-ass off-time emperor-esque **** on Phormula (and Rephormula) and then became Prog-black-jazz.
Lykathea Aflame's Elvenefris is a MUST. A masterpiece of melody and brutality.
Classic Death Metal for warm musical jizz:
Infester (Nazi themed death metal, fantastic album To The Depths...In Degradation)
Gorguts (just get anything you can, Martyr genius Dan Mongraine is also a member)
Crypt of Kerberos (World of Myths is a great album)
Pavor (DEAR SWEET JESUS these guys rule. Two albums, both unbelievable and original tech death with one almighty bassist)
Liers In Wait (more beautiful tech death)
    Now off to bed....

EDIT: and for those who enjoy the atheist/death/cynic technical death styling, try Illogicist. A new band with promise.

Is it next year he gets out? I thought he got some added time for kidnapping a family when he was out on Temporary Release last year (or maybe the year before). Didn't the cops arrest him at a road block while he was in the familys car, dressed in camo gear with a load of weapons and GPS equipment. Someone tell me that I didn't dream this.
Read an interview with him a while back and he actually seemed quite interlligent, shame he's more nuts than a bag of Planters really

Anyhoo, back to topic. I got out of black metal a long time ago but recently spotted The Oath of Black Blood in a store and had to buy it as it was one of my favourite black metal albums and I had great memories of moshing around the house to it. Took it home and put it on and nearly fell over laughing. Sounded like utter rubbish. Amazing the difference 10 odd years of metal education makes

As somone above also said, there's very little quality in this genre. A lot of the best black metal bands are no longer around for various reasons (Varg I'm looking at you) and there are very few newer bands putting anything worthwhile out. I must say though that I was impressed with Arkhon Infaustus when they supported Deicide.

Hate to say it but to my eyes (and I could be wrong) but BM seems to be a dying breed now. You never see 'ung fellas hanging around in Burzum/Mayhem shirts that you would have 10-15 years ago. There just doesn't seem to be the interest in BM anymore. The reason for this IMO is that what was once considered death metal (In Flames, Arch Enemy, Soilwork) is brushing the fringes of being fashionable and the gulf between these genres has never been wider. The move to BM used to be a natural progression from listening to DM bands - the same as most people starting off listening to AC/DC or G'N'R then onto Metallica or Maiden and getting progressively heavier. But as DM becomes less heavy and more melodic, BM is going to suffer.

    Pointless rant over

Kinda off topic but seeing as though someone else brought it up...

Anyone see the fat little kid on the Slayer DVD (can't remember if it's Still Reigning or War at the Warfield, whichever one had the documentary on it)...
Anyhoo, he's the one that comes out with the classic "If they're singing about death, then I'm thinking about life!!!!"

Sorry, but that cracked me up. Worth the price of the DVD on it's own

haha, that's a good memory.love sitting around with people listening to the fans on those dvds, that idiot- that sang the lyrics to a song completely wrong(he threw something in about a roof!) but it still had the rhythm and tune -was sooo funny :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 141 ✭✭Spoderman

Aye, there was a number of classics on that one. The guy outside the venue absolutely twisted that kept screaming "SSSLLLAAAYYEEEEEERRRRR". Bet his parents are proud. That little fat dude was priceless though, I think that fact that he was so serious the whole way through it and had such a high-pitched voice made it even better.

Even the g/f was falling around laughing at him and she doesn't even like Slayer

The girl on the Pantera DVD that was bawling her eyes out because she...ahem.."loved"...ahem...one of the roadcrew was pretty funny as well. The look he gives the camera was very funny.

Obviously you know about this || much about black metal (as COB are certainly NOT it).

Your knowledge of "real" death metal seems equally flimsy with your apparent inability to think of one band despite promising to do so but one line before.

Just one of those idiots that thinks the only real death metal occurred circa 1988-1993. Everything else (ie. Cryptopsy, Beneath The Massacre, Devourment) is just "nu-death." Usually have an MP3 folder populated by only death and thrash up until 1993 (bar a few raw black bands so they have certain tr00ness amongst black ranks) so they can pretend they were around for it and join the almighty metal intelligensia (we know them as elitists, the types who claim superiority over others because they managed steal certain music before they did).

But then again he might be an even lesser form of life known as the poser.
