It's more than just a new look: you now have the option to remove the so-called "adult" channels from the EPG.

As I understand it for now it’s only V1+ boxes that get the update, v2/v3 will follow soon

    more info here: http://forum.digitalspy.co.uk/board/showthread.php?t=272572

(also some nice pics of the 'new look')

reading that thread on DS, i dont want the update. the pin protection looks like a load of bollocks. handy if you have children but what if it is 2 people in their 20's living together

If it is two people in their 20's that don't want pin protection - then don't enable it.

It is the users choice to enable it in the new software - but default it is off.

but i read that even with it off, people are being asked for a pin on recorded movies

The biggest pain in the butt about the PIN protection on the new EPG is having to type in the PIN every time you go to access 'other channels'.
I know everybody here is well versed on how to use their digiboxes, but this is an idea of whats involved:

To switch between BBC 3 and 4 say, you have to do the following:

    1. Press 'Services'
    2. Select 'Other Channels'
    3. Type in PIN
    4. Select BBC 3
    5. Press 'Select'

Then to go to BBC 4

    6. Press 'Services'
    5. Select 'Other Channels'
    6. Type in PIN
    7. Select BBC 4
    8. Press 'Select'

The fact that there is no age information or other ratings on any channels off the EPG means that if you activate the PIN protection which I have to, with two rather clever kids :-) this rigmorole is needed to access any channel off the EPG.. maddening

i was asked for my pin when acessing other channels last week which i thought was strange, as i have never been asked for it before, or since and i'm on 3.3a.6

my Sky+ got some sort of update overnight

    the EPG software reads sky+1.30.q
tbh, it looks rotten and i cannot see anything new that i can do as of yet

edit: pushing help on a channel is better for subtitles on/off and the same for narrative

edit 2: red button timeout could be handy aswell (though it does take a while to remove)

i love it when Sky send updates, it's usually when i am recording something

I woke up this morning to a new look and to find that I had to enter a PIN to play back my daily recording of the CBS news on the Sky News channel!

Hopefully, the request for the pin is a "one-off" glitch connected with the upgrade.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

i tried a few recordings and other channels and wasnt asked for the pin once

    Updated box at 4am.

New look, PIN protection and Help button toggles subtitles on/off.

    Other minor stuff there too.

Thank God for that - I've just deleted the porn channels and restricted the Kids channels after 8pm - a pity I can't determine what time they switch off but 8pm is better than nowt.

What's with the Radio button on the '0' key? How is that supposed to work?

are any of you guys having trouble with the box asking for the pin all the time?

i'm at work now and didnt have time to mess around with the sky box properly

    merged witht he existing thread

Yep my box is asking for the PIN.

I don't want to use a PIN, there are no kids in my house why can't sky have an off function for people like me?

Fair enough it's useful if you have kids, and the feature should be there, but if you don't or everyone is an adult then why didn't they allow it be turned off.

This is what I dislike most about sky, not the monthly sub, but their total control of both the channels and the viewing platform. In the US i believe there is a bill to separate the decrypting functionality from the actual consumer unit (something like CAMs i guess). This allows a free market for companies to make boxes with features (like PVR/ flexible epg/ jump 5 mins) that $KY will never ever provide.

thankfully i dont have that pin problem but one thing i noticed is that it wont record 2 programmes that are back to back on a channel while at the same time recording another channel. this was allowed before. it said a programme clash or something was the problem

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,231 ✭✭✭✭Sparky

no pin problem for me, except on recorded films that are 15's and 18's
theres a red button function in the parental control menu to have pin restrictions on/off but that makes no difference

    Anyways System details as follows:
    Sky + V2

    Oper sys version. 1.31A0E
    EPG Software Ver. sky+ 1.30.q

Also have a failed recording from 1.30am
    says technical fault-8

also discovered that in telephone settings in the installers menu, if you change the dialing prefix an instant callback happens.
I only discovered when i had to put 142 in because of my number being ex-dir.

I tested what you said with a planned recording at 7 then at 8 on same channel and another recording at 8 on another channel

That's for the next update, when all the categories will be getting a makeover, with radio channels getting 4 digit allocations, as opposed to the three numbers currently.

I don't have any update on my Panasonic standard box yet, though I've seen it on quite a few old Pace 2500's.

At excatly 5.30 am this morning Mrs. Bond was watching an 18 rated film which was recorded earlier that evening. At 5.30 the film was interputed by a request for the PIN number. After entering the PIN the film started again from the point at which it stopped.

I'm not getting that problem (thankfully!). But when I was messing around with it earlier it was asking for a pin when I had some other channel locked. But as soon as I had unlocked it everything was a.o.k. again.

Enjoy this while you can. It's only a matter of time before all boxes have this requirement. I phoned Sky and they said that the new software update should mean that a PIN is required to access 'Add Channels', due to the fact that it's not possible to block manually added channels.
Sky got around this by adding the requirment of a PIN for ANY added channel.

I would say it's only a matter of time before all software upgraded boxes have this, whether we want it or not. I tried to unlock all the channels I had locked to no avail, I still need the PIN to acces 'Add Channels'
    :(

Other Channels only asked me for a pin when i had the Adult Channels taken off the EPG

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 820 ✭✭✭SRB

No sign of the update on my ancient (1998) panasonic box either, but given "the issues" I'm not complaining.

I havent been asked for the pin on other channels at all or for recordings and I got the new epg at the same time as you.
It's a UK sub I have though if that makes any difference.

I wouldnt expect the sky phone bots to pick up on this as they arent often fully in the know but I wonder would I be correct in thinking that that is the scenario where people are being asked for a pin-ie only when they use the feature to take channels like adult channels off the EPG?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

thats what i am thinking but there are some people who say they have removed all restrictions but still get prompted for a pin

It might be triggered only once and unchangeable after that.
I wouldnt put such a nuisance past Sky.

I'm not deleting any channel besides most of my TV watching is done from the sky plus planner now, visits to the EPG are increasingly rare.

    Just to continue this conversation...

There is a lot of discussion on digitalspy about the new PIN requirements, and some suggestions that Sky may allow viewers to disable this new "feature".

Anyhow, apart from the manual recordings needing a PIN, I also get some comedy programmes recorded at 1pm needing a PIN. I think it was suggested that that was because the station had not tagged the programme properly?

Also, for example, watching Lost (recorded off RTE) last night on Sky+ I had to enter the PIN even though it was after 11pm!!

So, do we need to start complaining to RTE that the programme is not tagged properly? However surely that's a bug? Surely after 11pm it does not matter what the programme is rated, there should be no PIN required?

This seems to have been handled very badly. Why should I need a PIN to play back a programme after 11, but not need a PIN to watch it live at 9pm?! It's crazy.

    Anyone actually complained to Sky?

    Ix.

I was away on Saturday and had set Match of the Day on BBC1 to be recorded on Sky+ but when i came back Sunday and checked it, the recording had failed. Not sure if this was "pin" related as the programme did not finish until after 12.00??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

oddly enough, i have never had the problem with this PIN asking problem

Sky is due too change its tv guide menu to 2 pages,It changes in the autaum time and it says its the biggest chande since sky digital came out...For more information visit http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/satellite/

The best change and on any FTA box, will be a favorites EPG (No-one watches as many as 50 Sky channels so 50 is reasonable), instead of all Sky's junk poked in your face.

It's less thant folks asked for from day 2 of Sky Digital, but an improvement.
