Hi Guys, I'm looking for a decent free FTP application for upload webpages to my server. My host only support ftp and they provided me with Wise FTP but its a bit crap tbh.

I'm currently using WS_FTP Professional 2006 which is brilliant, its exactly what i want but my free trial has run out

Any suggestions. I'm considering using a FTP plugin i got for firefox but i would prefer an actuall stand alone application.

    Thanks

    I suggest smartFTP: http://www.smartftp.com/
    drag-and-drop is nice.

    You could also try FilzZilla

Sold! I'm into my GNU/GPL products so i'll go with them, cheers :)

    ----Edit----
I'm having trouble connecting to my site with FilzZilla...
where it asks for the host, i presume thats the url without the www prefix and then the username and password to be the same username and password to access my ftp account....erm, but it comes back saying unable to connect and times out after 5 attempts! Is there something i'm missing out on?

I suggest using WinSCP a freeware, quick and easy to use SFTP and SCP client. Very good product. Much better then the likes of SmartFTP / WS FTP etc in my opinion! Tho it only connects to an SSH enabled server and not a normal FTP server as its more securer.. Might not be much use?

I have my account with www.1and1.co.uk and they support sftp & ssh connections so i might give them a look if filzZilla doesn't work out

I'd second both the filezilla and winSCP options. Works great for me.

FileZilla connects to FTP, SCP and SFTP.

Sweet. Might check it out so myself, as WinSCP doesnt offer any FTP support :/

Also, you could always try the FireFTP extension for FireFox if you use that browser. Pretty nice - more info at: http://fireftp.mozdev.org/ :)

in internet explorer you can use the ftp protocol in the address bar like so:
    ftp://username:password@your.ftp.server.here

it'll open the remote site like another folder. drag and drop in or out of it, if you don't want to download other software. I don't use it personally, not sure if it saves it in the address bar drop down or anything like that.

    EDIT: I use Filezilla.

Its crap, basic, ****ty, and slower. No offence IE developers :P Never tried the Firefox protcol, just FireFTP. Doubt its much better.

I use WinSCP where possible, Filezilla elsewhere.

I actually use the Filezilla Server software for my ftp server, great system.

I've used IE to upload via FTP before and its utter sh*te as mentioned by Sully. I think everyone nowadays who is any bit PC literate is making the move away from Microsoft Apps as much as possible.

I got FileZilla working :-) Brilliant!
I'm going to use that the FireFTP plugin now instead of Ipswitch WS_FTP Pro 2006.

    Thanks lads
