I am considering buying myself a keyboard.

As a complete novice I was looking for suggestions on this.

    My needs are fairly simple.

Decent quality at a reasonable price.
So what is the lowest price I should pay?
What makes/models should I be looking at?
As regards learning should I consider classes or self-tuition?

A lower end Roland is good if you're starting out, but make sure that it has weight sensitive keys. If you're serious, however, you'll want a proper upright piano or a decent keyboard with weighted keys. Typically this will set you back about a grand 2nd hand.
I've been 11 years in the various DIT music colleges and, although I had great teachers, the ABRSM course is very constraining and may be frustrating and off-putting to beginners. I'd advise going to Waltons or a private teacher instead, as there is no pressure from exams and you can (a) Set your own pace and (b) Learn what *you* want to learn.

Easiest thing would be the MicroKorg as it has all features of a classic synthesizer but to make it real easy all sound banks are divided into genres from Techno to retro and so on. The inbuilt Vocoder is great as well.

Duran Duran Keyboardist Nick Rhodes uses one on their current tour and I use it since December 2005 and still like the sound of it.

It is about € 550,- at the moment.

    Check it out
