Finding a laptop

Ok, I need to get a laptop for college, and have done a fair amount of research but I've got one problem, I've no credit card to order one online with. I was wondering if anyone could help me with finding something suitable that are available in the shops so that I don't end up buying a piece of junk? My price range is 600-1200 tops, I'll need something that I'll be able to run programs such as Dreamweaver, Macromedia Director ect on, and I do a lot of surfing so something that’s wireless is essential. I’ll also need something that’ll last long battery-wise and that won’t be too heavy or bulky. Any suggestions would be great.

I think you've answered your own question.

    >> Fast processor, large RAM, average Gfx card, with wireless networking. <<

There's plenty out there, all you're going to get from here is "I've got a [enter brand] and it's [great/ok/super/fine]"
Then somebody will come along later and say it's crap.

Please check the stickies and report back. remeber sometimes buying laptop with terrible mem is easil upgraded for a cheap price.Gfx are geanerally not upgradabl (besides some) same with CPU's.
Reckon you need something in the range of a 1.8 Centrino or more and at least 512mb RAM with a nice gfx , x6/7/800 or 6600 or 6800 - maybe a M2...
Check some of the sites and you may see money transfer/order for options. Some of the big companies may oblige your situation

Even without a credit card you can order stuff online - bank transfer.
    Try this.
you can pay them by bank transfer.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I'll take another look around. I actually might consider asking a friend to get a dell laptop for me online, what are people's opinions on these laptops? are they worth buying?

Dell have an Inspiron 6000 advertised on PC Live this month, with a gig of Ram, Centrino with Pentium M 1.6GHz, DVD+R, 40GB HDD, 64 Meg Graphics, etc. E-value code is PPUK5-N09606. €1099.

I took delivery of a similar machine last week, less RAM, more GFX, more HDD, faster processor. Getting 3-4 hours battery on light officey use so far.
