My McAfee subscription expires soon - just got the e-mail message from them asking for £25 to renew for another year.

I am not impressed with it. I still use Windows 98 but VirusScan does not get on with some other software !

Thinking about junking it and getting Norton instead.

Any ideas please ? Thanks.

I use avg and its gr8, its also free, get it ;)

    Nick

Edit: Don't get Norton, Its a virus in itself, you'll be lucky to turn on your puter after installation, without it crashing :D

Agreed, Norton is an absoulute nightmare. I installed it before on my PC and it took over my entire PC, i lost control over my recycle bin when i attempted to uninstall norton. I had to do a fresh reinstall of windows to solve the problem. I couldn't delete norton from the registery at all.

    Beware!

Norton is great when it works. But it does have a rep of F**king up every so often and screwing your PC. and it can be resource hogging. So since ur running Win98 AVG is prob a better option. Its pretty good and I use it myself on home PC. (as opposed to norton on work machines).

    Thanks for that advice.

It chimes with information that I got from a few other sources.

    AVG it is.

I also heard of another freebie called AVAST but I don't know anything about it.

I've been using Avast for a while now and have had no problems with it. It slows down applicatons a wee bit as it scans any file before it is opened [not a bad thing], but that is about the only mildly negative thing have found..

i run both AVG and !Avast on my computer (along with adaware, spyware doc and zonealarm) and find that these free programmes in conjunction with eachother offer excellent protection. Of the two !Avast is the better. It updates daily and, while the scan is slow, it is very thorough.
