Trademarking a branch of science?

A well known horse organisation has decided they want to trademark the phrase "Equine Ethology". Now, this seems like BS to me.. how can you trademark a branch of science?? It's no different to trademarking "Canine Anatomy" or "Feline Biology" or "Computer Science"... Can you do this?

It seems so ridiculous, and yet they've sent in their application and it's currently being considered.. I'm going to lodge an objection, as I would like to study ethology at some point (and hopefully equine ethology), but where would universities stand if the name of the science has been trademarked?

That's pretty mad. I've had a horrible image of the future:

    Nike brings you bioinorganic chemistry.
