I was wondering what temp my AMD 3000 should be running at when idle?? as i'm typing it's running at 53c - just excel and word running. it's a new computer so there should be no problems with dust. that said, there was a problem with the mobo and i needed a replacement. in replacing the mobo some of the thermal compound that came with the chip got removed. i assume this is the problem. would meths be acceptable to use on the chip and heat-sink to remove the old compound? finally, what rpm should i have my fan (only have one) at. currently it has a threshold of about 3000.

    thanks guys and girls!!

you need to use something that contains isopropyl alcohol, nail polish remover is an example, wouldnt recommend that on the chip imho.

you'll then need to replace the removed thermal compound, Arctic silver, is one of the best,

in terms of fan speed heatsink fans are usually thermal controlled by the mobo, afaik the threshold is just a point at wish you want to be informed if the fan goes above that speed, alarm sounds.

do you have any case fans to remove the hot air from the case if not it might be a good idea to get some.

nail polish remover it is then!!

before my mobo trouble the cpu was running at 30 odd degrees. so i can only assume it is because some of the compound got removed and possibly air and dirt got trapped when i put it back together again.

i already have some compound, thanks! i've been told that applying a small amount (pea size) to the heat sink and squishingit oonto the cpu is the thing to do, but the instructions say to use a plastic bag to apply to heatsink! which is best?

    thanks again!

yea a small amount is all thats needed, place a pea-sized amount on the core of the cpu, and spread it around with a card, e.g. ID card or Credit card, until you have a thin layer covering the whole of the core and wipe away any excess
