Just a little question. not looking for advice or anything just looking for peoples experiences and opinions!

My girlfriend is about to go on the pill. she has been perscribed Yasmin. now neither of us have much knowledge of any of this kinda thing (not even the price, the doc gave her a free pack so the price of it could be handy to know too :)) so just looking to see wat peoples experiences have been with this pill bad or good!! just wanna know wat the chances of it effecting her are cos shes just about to start college!

anyone experienced really bad side effects?
wat can she expect from it? etc

basically just lookin to see wat others have experienced with it! all comments are welcome!

    Thanks!

    heya!

i have been on yasmin for the past few years and find it brilliant to be honest. i didnt put on any weight, and my skin really cleared up...i never get spots anymore since taking it. its usually around 11 to 13 euros a packet which contains a months supply. anyway, dont worry too much, not every pill effects everyone the same way, but there are loads to try so if it doesnt agree with your girl friend just go back to ur doc like and try a different brand. :)

    cya

we've got 2 kids we didnt plan for!

Not complaining, I wouldnt have it any other way now, but at the times it was a bit of a shock! not once but twice.

And yes she took them all the time etc!

"Son, did you know that antibiotics can prevent the pill from working properly?, because your mother and I didn't."

If she pukes it up it might be a problem too. Obvious probably, but something else you might not think of once it is routine.

OP,AFAIK,Yasmin is one of the best kinds of pill. The majority of women who take it don't put on any weight and my friend's breasts grew a size bigger when she was on it so it's all good! :D

If she has any vomiting or diahorrea (sp?) for whatever reason she may not be contraceptively covered, so if that happens you should use condoms for 7 days. I'm on the pill (not Yasmin though), the only bad side effect I've had is that it's a little harder for me to keep weight off, and my breasts have got bigger, but I have much better skin and stronger nails now. I know it can increase the risk of something called deep-vein thrombosis but the doctor would have checked her so she'll probably be fine. Oh, and a pack of pills for me costs about €12.50, hers will probably cost around the same

There are some serious side effects associated with the Pill, but these are rare.

Here's an information page from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the USA which give reliable info.

    http://www.fda.gov/cder/consumerinfo/druginfo/yasmin.HTM

General cautions are needed to ensure the pill works, for instance when vomiting it clearly is not going to stay, but when taking antibiotics, consider the pill less effective for the duration of the antibiotic use and for 1 week afterwards. This is because the hormones are recycled by gut bacteria and increase in the body, taking antibiotics kills of these bacteria - ergo reduced recycling. It applies to ALL antibiotics.

Certain medicines also induce liver enzymes and this means that the pill is processed faster and thus a larger dose is needed. This is why it is very important to tell your GP about ALL medicines you are taking.

There are others too and are described in the product information leaflet that is included.

The more common side effects have been greatly improved with the new regimens and contraceptive types which mimic closely the hormone level changes during the menstrual cycle and so are less disruptive. They are also more expensive.

The pill sometimes doesn't work 100% of the time, nevertheless it works 99.9% of the time, of ALL contraceptive types available - it is the most effective. The trials showing this are also imperfect and do not exclude people who would be considered "haphazard users" - thus one can hypothesise that proper use of a modern pill, barring untoward interactions with antibiotics etc comes very, very close to 100% effectiveness.

im on the pill at the moment, microlite, started about 2/3 months ago, it's been brillant for me, couldn't complain, i haven't put any excess weight/ noticed any other changes (it's only 10.20 in the chemist and you can get student reductions in some chemists).

it can make you a bit moody for the first month or so until your body gets used to it, and it also makes your period come earlier the first month you take it.

if your GF has a history of breast cancer in her immediate family i don't think they recommend taking it, and they'll take your gf's blood pressure to be sure that it dosnt cause a dvt/ blood clot

im on microlite too and have never had any problems. ive never heard any horror stories about yasmin, but op tbh no matter how many opinions you get on it everyone reacts differently. what is perfect for some may be awful for others. so id say just see how it goes, it might take a little while for her body to adjust to the pill (breakthrough bleeding etc, but im sure the doctor told her all about possible side effects). but after that phase if she isnt happy just go back to the doc, theres so many types on the market :)

My sister is on Yasmin, she's never had any bad side effects.

I'm on Microlite, it's very low dosage, I want something stronger because I'm still getting a lot of pain, but I doubt my doctor will because I'm 16 and he said before I'm too thin to cope with anything stronger. Bah.

spastic cramps? you should take antiflammatorys like Ponstein along with the pill (only problem is you have to take them with food or they can burn out your stomach), the doctor normally perscribes these too.

your doctor will give you a stronger pill if you need it, normally the first 3 months of being on it is a trial period in which case you go back to your doctor for a repeat perscription or ask him/her to change cos it's not suiting you. honestly your doctor will upgrade/ change it, loads of people end up changing theirs and if he/she dosn't then change your doctor!

You have a strange definition of bad :D

Yasmin rules. I'm on it a year now, have heard from friends that its the best one to be on in terms of little or no side effects. I haven't noticed any side effects

Girlfriend is on it for the last few years and it is the biz. It has become a very good friend of mine

Well I think it's bad, most girls would define putting on a bit of weight as a bad thing

I was on Yasmin a few years ago and had to come off it due to some side effects.

The side effect I experienced was that I became extremely depressed when I went on the seven day break. A doctor changed me to a lower dose pill, Microlite and my situation has improved.

But as others have said the pill will effect different girls in different ways.

I went on yasmin about two and a half years ago, and thought it was the best pill ever (after trying some before and getting depressed, putting on lots of weight etc). i actually lost weight on this pill, went up a cup size to a d, periods were lighter and had no pms.

after about nine months of being on it, my pms started getting gradually worse, my moods were changing, and i started getting nervous, breathless and shaky. i came off the pill after a couple of months of this and had a break for about a year. the nervousness, and shakiness stopped within a month of me coming off the pill.

i went back on yasmin after about a year, and noticed all the fantastic advantages of yasmin i had first time round, but after six months i began getting nervous andpanicky all the time. i went on the net and found many stories specific to yasmin causing panic and increased nervousness. i came off it again and within a couple of months was luckily back to normal.

moral of story is, yasmin, like all pills, suits some people and not others. many use the pill without any adverse side effects, but everyone is different. its probably just a case of your gf trying it for a few months and deciding based on her own experience
