Files transfer problem

Hello, I posted this on the video editing forum, but you guys might have a better idea how to fix this:

I made a movie on Windows Movie Maker. I was unsuccessful in my attempt to burn that to my external DVD burner. The software I had to convert it said it couldn't!

Now I have a mac with a burner I can work. I've loaded the movie onto my ipod but it comes up as a document file on my MAC.

Does anyone know is it possible to get this file working on a MAC. I was told before I bought it that all my media files would be transferrable.

    Thanks

Is it an .avi file? Or a Movie Maker file? If an avi, you should pass it to the doctor who will fix it.

Teh best tool to convert video files to almost any format (dvd included) is ffmpedX

If it's a movie maker file you should export it to a proper video file in windows before (avi, mpg, mov...)

I have the same problem and it's one of those! So how do I do this?

I haven't used a windows machine for a couple of years now, only to fix viruses, spyware and similars. Never touched Movie Maker, sorry.
Check in the program's help, it should say how to export/save at least to avi, from there using ffmpegX as said before should do it fine.

Right, I've figured out a way to do this.

All I have to do is save my movie back onto my DV camcorder. Still in it's DV format.

And then import the movie to the mac the same way I import in new stuff.

Windows help sayd I can do this, but I need a IEEE 1394 cable connected into an IEEE 1394 port.
I understande USB and Firewire. But does anyone know what this is?

IEEE1394 and Firewire are the same thing. Apple call it Firewire the rest of the world call it the easier to remember IEEE1394 !!

Why not just do the whole thing on the Mac with iMovie and iDVD ? Moviemaker is primarily for making low bitrate movies for sending via email. That's probably why your DVD software wouldn't accept it.

Bt the way have you actually managed to get the DV back onto the camera? Not all DV cameras allow DV IN - I think it's cheaper if they don't.

My PC doesnt have a firewire port so I cant check if my camcorder allows that or not.

I'm using iMovie for editing now. But Im just trying to get all the old movies I've made off my PC.

Windows Movie Maker is looking a lot better at the moment. I'd be using that if I hadnt just spent two and a half grand on a mac. It has more transitions, and effects.
Guess they just want us to buy Final Cut Pro.

What are the file extensions of the files you need to transfer ?
Does movie maker create one big file or a scene file with a lot of media clips like imovie does ?
As edunon suggests exporting it as a standard file format and then burning the file to a data dvd rather than a video dvd should work and get around the "converter" problem.
