Internet Explorer Problem-Please help

I have windows 2000 on my PC.

Internet explorer has been acting up.

I connect, then open my browser. A few minutes later a box comes up saying "SVChost.exe has generated erroes and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created"

So it then directs of to a site "http://217.170.4.137/_vti_bin/index.htm"

I have no idea what is going on.

So then I try to go back to say, yahoo page, for example and all i get is the page "this page cannot be displayed".

I then try to disconnect through the little icon (right click--->disconnect) but nothing happens. I then go to the task manager and it says there are no applications running.

I eventually have to restart the computer to get back on the net (and the same problem occurs again within a few minutes).

Also, there is a little red icon on the bottom right hand side of my screen (taskbar) ALL the time. Cant get rid of it (small red circle with an exclamation mark on it). Keeps saying "!Your computer is infected!" (seems to be some kind of pop up gimick).

Can anyone help please. This is head wrecking!

    thanks

it sounds like you have a problem with spyware that has infected IE, you'll probably have to go to a friends machine or an internet cafe, and download Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware and install them on your pc and run full checks.

the problems with svchost.exe can be caused by a virus that has named itself svchost.exe, or it could be related to the IE problem, what AV have you got installed?

Blaster worm. Get AV, clean and then patch windows.

    Thanks for the reply.

I have done a full virus check on the machine and nothing was found (Norton AntiVirus). I have ad aware on the machine and run it regularly. It found a few diggers the other day and I deleted them. But that damn icon wont go. What is SVChost anyways?
    Thanks again

Er, it's not a "gimmick", it's your anti-virus telling you you have a virus.
    Run your AV

Er, no its not coming from my AntiVirus. I cant even close off this item. When I click on it it goes to a website that is not norton antivirus.

Looks like something has installed on the pc - I dont know how to get rid of it and there internet problems.

    Thanks

Download the Malicious Software Removal Tool from Microsoft.
When the box comes up telling you the system is shutting down, open the Start menu, choose Run, type in shutdown.exe -a
    This will cancel the shutdown.
Run it to remove Blaster (or varient)

download and run both Adaware and SpyBot (you can get them from download.com)

Once they are downloaded, close IE, run them both (one at a time) cleaning any spyware.
Reboot, Update AV and run it.

    Run MS updates.

svchost.exe is a system process which handles processes executed from DLLs.
    It's important.

I think this is the specific MS update needed

Try Mozilla Firefox instead of Internet Explorer

    Man that's helpful.

    "I have a virus"
"Install something. Installing things gets rid of viruses right?"
