    Anyone going on the Big Walk Sunday 28th?

    =================================

    The Big Walk

    On Sunday the 28th of August next, the people of Waterford will have a unique opportunity to explore the new Waterford City Outer Ring Road by taking part in “The Big Walk”. The event is being organised by the De La Salle Scout Group in association with Waterford City Council with the aim of having over 5000 of Waterford’s citizens take part in an official walk of the new road before it is opened to traffic in early September.

    Everyone in Waterford is welcome to walk or run any or all sections of the road and an excellent array of entertainment and activities are planned along the route. The more families and even dogs (on leashes!) the better. Live music will be provided by a number of bands and artists from across the city, there will be loads of entertainment and competitions for the kids, stalls, as well as refreshment centres and a scout camp kitchen to keep your energy up. A register of the first citizens of Waterford to officially walk the route will also be taken for presentation to the mayor and the city council for preservation with the city’s historical records.

    The Big Walk will take place between 2.30pm and 5.30pm on Sunday the 28th and there will be a starting point and car parking from each of the roundabouts at the Williamstown Road, the Airport Road, the Old Tramore Road, the Tramore Road, the Six Cross Roads, the Butlerstown Road and the Cork Road. These will be well signposted on the day and will be stewarded by the Civil Defence and An Garda Siochana.

    There is no charge for taking part in this event but any donations received, will go towards the development fund of the De La Salle Scout Group. The Group are planning to develop a new Scout Centre at a green field site at Gracedieu in the north west suburbs of Waterford City in 2008. Many thousands of young people have taken part in scouting in De La Salle over the years and having celebrated 75 years of service to Waterford City two years ago, the group maintains a very strong vision for its future growth and development. Today, the group consists of two Beaver Colonies, two Macaoimh (Cub Scout) Packs, two Scout Troops, a Venturer Group, as well as the unique De La Salle Scout Pipe Band and caters for over 150 of the city’s youth.

    It is hoped that the people of Waterford City will turn out in their thousands to see their city from an angle from which they never saw it before, take part in a piece of their city’s history and support one of Waterford’s oldest and finest youth organisations. Further information is available on the website of the De La Salle Scout Group at www.dlscouts.ie.
