Router in Ireland and Scotland

Okay, I'm pretty much useless when it comes to these things, but I've recently bought a new laptop and am planning on getting a wireless router to make the most of it.

The desktop at home is already connected to DSL (Eircom basic package, Cayman modem etc) and I'm confident I can get the network set up okay... thats not my issue.

I'm moving to Scotland in a few weeks for college, and plan on getting DSL over there (cos, y'know, not having internet sucks). However, a friend of mine was saying that a router which works over here might not necessarily work over there (different standards or something - PPPoE and PPPoA or some such, I really don't know).

Can anyone help/ explain things to me?
