Scissors/ Franz Gig

The sound was brutal. I was not far from the front and could have a normal conversation with the people beside me. Just one stack of speakers on each side of the stage.

Franz F:- Thought they were very good considering. Bout 30 mins of new stuff followed by older stuff. Had some good banter with the crowd, reading out what was on their signs. No sh1te talk, just good rockin music. Would have been a stormer in Dublin castle or Point/Olympia.

Scissor sisters:- Quite a stage set. Waited for first 45 mins and left then. Only knew 2 songs. And they don't half talk American sh1te during the songs. During one break, yer one went on for over 5 minutes on Einstein, protein, amino acids, mass & energy. That might wash somewhere they can't understand English, but it was absolute drivel. Very disappointed.

Never goin to Landsdown again (unless AC/DC play)

Thank God, I thought it was just me getting old. The sounds was terrible.

Is it always like that at Lansdowne ?

It was really bad. As Monkeyman said Franz and SS were quite good. You should have stayed till the end as they played more of their older stuff.

Sound up in the stands wasn't any better. Brutal. Thought Franz Ferdinand were the highlight, followed by maroon5. Sissor sister just aren't my cup of tea & when she started spouting that einstien rubbish that monkeyman mentioned it was time to go.

Was outside eating chips for a while & there was quite a steady stream of people leaving soon after as well

the two lansdowne gigs were a rip-off.
they are not allowed to play loud by the residents. who are bunch of D4 nimby w*nkers. probably mcdowell voters. there were even people outside measuring decibel levels.
the sound system was as small as that in the point - a small indoor venue!
absolutely disgraceful , and an insult to both the punters and the bands who have to play through it.
    typical modern irish scam.
and f*** off to budweiser. i believe they are concerned about falling sales in ireland, so they are assaulting us with all this gig sponsorship. hopefully after this everyone will stop buying the ****e.
5 quid for a pint of piss, with no other choice!

sad thing is, pixies especially played very well, if the sound had been proper it could have been really great.

I thought the sound was ok where we were but, only okay. We were at the left of the stage quite near the front but very much to the side. Great view of the screens. I LOVED Franz Ferdinand, but, I thought SS were only alright. I know a band has to push their new music, but, when the album is not even out it is hard to get a crowd excited about it.
Good night out though but I am suffering this morning with pure exhaustion!! Wednesday night is not the night for this sort of event!!

I hail from right beside Landsdowne and I was dissappointed I couldn't hear it well!
Was looking forward to some free music!!

Can you back up your statement that residents had requested decibel limits? My household was never consulted.

was there on Tuesday and kept saying to my friends that i thought the sound was crap but nobody else seemed to mind.

Guitar solo's kept fading in and out. Terrible place for a gig. Never again for me.

Also had one pint in the whole night as i hate Budweiser and refused to drink it. Complete dictatorship with the booze. No stout whatsoever!

i dont know who requested it, but it wasnt someone in cork i'm sure.
i walked past a girl with a decibel meter. who would request that? If it was the council doing the measurements, it would be done based on concerns/demands from residents.

u2 played as loud as they wanted in croke park with a ten times bigger system, and were pretty damn loud! same city council, different residents.

Anger Management needed methinks. Curse those McDowell voters with small children trying to sleep ruining your drunken enjoyment

Incidentally, was it just me or did the Scissor Sister overrun by half an hour? Or did they have an 11 O'Clock licence for them? I really hope they overran and were fined the standard festival rate of €20,000 per minute of overrun. :D

I have to say I despise their sub beegees/elton john cabaret schtick. I remember seeing them on TV once and thinking they were contestants in X Factor or some such drivel. Hopefully their big gay beardy hat-wearing star with wane soon.

FF were pretty rocking. And you've got to admire anyone who takes to the stage to the Dr Who theme music.

I think scissor sisters were allowed run until 11 - they weren't due onstage until 2130

yeah, my complaint about the sound (i was only at the pixies gig) isn't that it was too quiet but that you couldn't hear vocals and guitar solos clearly - it was all very muddy and indistinct. But i've never been to a big outdoor gig where the sound has been any better than adequate.

anyone interested in hearing the Pixies' set properly can buy an official cd of the gig here - www.pixiesdiscs.com

landsdowne road - great place for a rugby match, bad for a gig.

the wind blows from everywhere, so the sound goes everywhere, and bands always seem to play bad there. i was at the chilis gig in 2002 there and it was a class day, but the sound was only mediocre - exactly the same thing - we couldn't hear guitar solos. RDS is way better for gigs

don't mind any of that rubbish!!

scissors sisters were absolutely FANTASTIC - even their new stuff was funky & had everyone dancing & jumping around - i cant wait til the new album comes out cos i already know half of it is excellent. the "****e talking" was quite clever & funny if you listened to it - it's all about creating atmosphere - which they certainly did, it was one of the most fun gigs i've been to in years, everyone around us were dancing their hearts out, i didnt see any misery guts in the vicinity! they are amazing performers & the carnival atmosphere they create just cant be beaten.

i hadnt seen franz ferdinand before & i was expecting them to be quite sedate, but they weren't - defof up for a bit of craic aswell, they seemed to enjoy the gig as much as we did.

and i thought the sound was just fine - a few of our gang had been at pixies tuesday night and said it was a 100% improvement.

so - all in all...had an absolutely brilliant night, the rain didnt dampen our spirits & i'm just sad it'll be months before i get to see SS again.

    feck the begrudgers! :p

The noise limits for all gigs in Dublin are the same, what differs is who obeys them. The U2 promoters didn't give a **** if they breached, the max fine is about 5k...Lansdowne on the other hand are being very careful, they are trying to get permission for the redevelopment so they will have warned the promoters to behave as they can't risk upsetting the corpo...

nearly every gig has sound meter people....my friend does it (it was probably her you saw). Promoter needs to get it as part of the licence

yeah the sound wasn't great. Although my friend was at the pixies and he said it was terrible that night. I wasnt too far back but my friend and i could talk normally too each other no problem, and we noticed this, and how it wasnt really a good thing! Especially when the person beside you sings along (badly). It was hard enough to hear the bands sing, nevermind when you've got someone screaming in your ear! (usually i dont mind cause the music blocks it out, but i really noticed last night)

FF were good, i thought maroon5 were too. scissors sisters were ok, but that speech about the bloody protein, and DNA went on for ever. i couldnt really see at all (damn tall ppl!) so couldnt see the stage set up properly. Although after seeing that big huge 'Scissors sisters' set of lights i was seeing it again every time i blinked!

It was all ok, couldve been way better

I'm from Sandymount. D4, incase you didn't already know. And I'm quite offended by your post.
Why shouldn't people residing near Landsdowne have the right to as much peace and quiet as they can get? They have to put up with a lot of noise from concerts, matches etc., and the promoters have to realise this and to some extent, realise the resident's wishes.
So what if your ears didn't bleed during the show, you heard the music didn't you?

Thought scissor sisters were great, if you guys dislike them that much why did you bother to stick around, just coz they're gay/poppy/not afraid to be ironic or just plain silly doesn't mean they have no credibility. If you're not afraid to delve into the album you'll find many different influences beyond elton john/bee gees, including pink floyd and im not talking about comfortably numb. Its a great album, they're fun loving talented musicians and i had a great time anyway, i like Franz Ferdinand yes but they were a bit boring last night, whereas when SS came on we were dancing and going wild along with everyone around us.

Being snobby like that when it comes to music just means you're limiting your taste and missing out on a lot of good stuff - sometimes its great to listen to good, deep, no questions credible music but now and then isn't it nice to have a bit of fun too? No?!

Well said SBob - sounds like a bunch of miserable people here. Can't believe the reaction on this thread, especially going by the fantastic atmosphere last night. I would much prefer to have a band interact with a crowd than listen to some mumbling band who have no charisma about them altogether. FFS, the whole energy speech was what - 2 minutes long?

Agreed about the sound though - whatever about the local residents (who incidentally should well know what they are getting into when they choose to live around Lansdowne road), the sound was crap. I used to live near the RDS, and the sound carried much further - and never annoyed me once.

What if they were born and bred in the area? Should their parents have anticipated the advent of Bud Rising?

Probably because you're not an 11 month-old baby. But I could be mistaken.

As for the Scissor Sisters, I'm going to have to quote Noel Gallagher here. "Anais likes the Scissor Sister, but then again she would, she's a kid and they make music for juveniles".

Well, I detest Oasis so wouldn't give much credence to what he says. And as I don't like them, I wouldn't go to a concert of theirs and then b1tch about how crap they were.

Noel Gallagher also said he liked John Lennon becuase he "didn't give a **** about anything".

Gig was good, apart from the sound quality. Enjoyed FF and Maroon 5 doing 'Hello' was a nice surprise(was it just me or did this get the biggest reactiob out of their set?).

Despite all the anti d4 banter the guys got a point. if your going to do an outdoor gig you don't do the sound in half measures. thats why fields are so nice! the cows dont mind!
and im sorry but there's worse places to live besides landsdowne. for the few gigs and (daytime) matches a year i think they can deal with it.
totally crap venue though.cant wait till the raize it to the ground.

Would agree with you there about SS being good.
The GF dragged me to see them at Oxegen last year and they were the most lively band there.
    Very entertaining.

I wouldn't go to a concert of theirs and then b1tch about how crap they were.

Neither would I. I had no choice but to listen to the Scissor Sisters and could hear every note and every word in the interior of my house. Possibly from what's being said here the sound in my garden would've been better than at Lansdowne itself. Next year I may sell tickets :)
    I detest Oasis

You probably wouldn't like it if they were playing an open air gig next to your house until 11 pm then?

Sorry, for some reason I thought you were actually at the gig. I really am surprised that it was that loud outside of the venue. When Maroon 5 were on, I could not hear them from just outside the stadium, even though I was actually in the grounds. When some people were talking beside me during the SS set, it was actually quite hard to hear the music over them. Maybe Lansdowne has some strange accoustics or something...

I thought Franz Ferdinand rocked! I was in the pit, the sound seemed fine to me; I had earplugs in as well, though I took them out a couple of times during very quiet parts.

I noticed the same thing that someone else commented on, that you couldn't even tell that a band was playing when you were outside of the stadium... I was working as a photographer at the event, and when I was outside, I couldn't even tell when the Maroon 5 set had ended! Was worried I was going to miss FF, but when I heard the Dr. Who theme music start up, I knew I was just in time....great way to start a show!!!! :D

Noel Gallagher!!! Scissor sisters have oodles more crediblility then this guy now. Oasis had an amazing start to their career before it went to their heads and Noel was idiotic enough to let Liam write songs. Plus the whole Bealtes comparison thing was NEVER justified, and calling your album 'standing on the shoulders of giants' and then trying desperately hard to make your songs sound like Beatles songs is just pathetic - its easy to slag the musical talent of a pop band, but just because you are an indie band doesn't mean you don't make commercial and contrived music, which unfortunately oasis have done, no more than coldplay they now sell albums based purely on their name and reputation.

So basically i wouldn't pass a bit of heed on what either have of this moronic duo have to say.
