Does anyone know how accessible medical records from a doctor or hospital are to other groups ie: the gardai or army? Can they check your records or can hospitals only give them out with your consent?

Afaik, the Gardai can't get their hands on them without a court order, and the amry can't without the help of the Gardai.

Of course, if you're looking to *work* in the defence forces, they may tell you that you must give permission for them to get your medical records before you can work with them.

But that's unlikely. They'll do their own medical. If you pass that, there's no reason why you shouldn't get in, regardless of your past history. Can't be too difficult to detect that you've only one kidney or that you've a metal plate in your right thigh.

If you join the army I think you sign a form saying they can contact your GP but nothing is said about hospital records.

Every few years the DVLA in the UK do have reason to check my GP and hospital records and I have to sign a form for them each time. Not that I think they ever have checked as I always get my license back far too quickly for them to have done that, but there is nothing that I've ever had to say to the GP or hospital directly about giving permission its always been just signing the forms for the DVLA who might want to check.

They would only have reason to contact a hospital though if the GP got back to them saying so, and which hospital. At which point they'd get back onto you I guess.
