Just wondering are there any boardsters playing in the provincial team play-off in the Merrion on Saturday? Myself and ZZR1100 will be there from the south west, along with 2 more from our home game. Would be good to meet some of the names from here if poss.

its mainly the old pros from the Merrion who are qualified for that playoff - not sure if many of them would know how to turn on a computer; let alone post here!

I'll be at it, I'm going to be reviewing it for antesup.com. Not sure how its all decided as it seems to already be closed to entries (am I correct?), but I'll be heading for a pint afterwards.

Christy Smith was organising tournaments in the last few weeks to decide on the team, apparently.

I saw the leinster team selection in the herald last week. Some excellent selections such as Alan Betson etc but also a lot of very poor ones (will not name names)
Its a pity the selection process was not publicised more as I think there are a lot of players on this board who would have been very interested,

I believe 10 qualified through the Merrion and 10 each for the other teams through pokerevents tournament rankings. The other 4 players were picked by the team captains. The prizemoney for the €500 + €40 tournament is paid out on an individual basis and only a trophy and bragging rights for the best team. This to stop collusion as in some other team events. €20 of the reg is going to charity as well.

Er, I was born in Sligo, Len, so I'm a Connacht man ... along with Roy "The Boy", whose grandmother I believe was born in Leitrim ;)

And Alan Betson doesn't feature on Leinster team as publicised on the poker events website... not sure if i'm allowed spam, but i'm just finishing off a nice bottle of sancerre so i don't really care!!!

Yeah it was pretty poorly organised really. I'd be backing the Ulster team by the looks of the things.

I wandered into the Merrion a couple of months back, and the weekly league game for the leinster team was on. 100e freezeout, with a fair chunk going to both the team and charity, so the prizepool was small. Only 20 players that night, with 30min blind levels, and stack sizes of 5K, which was a really good structure. Ended up coming 2nd to Player X, picking up 300e (Norman got 600e). The problem was, the structure was too good... it took 6 bloody hours to play out! That's fine for a big prizepool, but for the money we were playing for it was torture!

I'm surprised this wasn't advertised a bit more, as with a big field it could have been a really good weekly game with a lot of rivalry.

Agree with Daithio, Ulster have a class team, definately the most balanced team in it.

Players for each province qualified through leagues along with four wild cards. Every major card club in Ireland was approached to run leagues. The Merrion and Macau ran them in the south and Paul Leckey organized several in the north.
The Fitz were the first to be offered opportunity of crediting existing in house events or running a separate league, said they were interested but then did nothing about it. All pokerevents league leaders also qualified. It was heavily advertised at all our events and it was posted here that tournaments award player points towards provincial Poker Teams.
The idea is to produce a official IrishPokerTeam that will have the best players on it. This is quite a difficult task as many of the best expect to picked as wild cards instead of ginding it out in qualifiers. This is the first in a series of events that will credit points to top players who will then be entitled to part of a sponsered team competing in international events as individuals and possibly a international teams event in early 2007.
The runners for this first event are of a exceptional high standard and if some begrugers do point the finger (which will always be the case)I'm confident it will be the best of Irish Poker even if we missing some of the big names notably, andy black, frank callaghan, alan betson, peter roache, george mckeeverto name a few, all have either committed or expressed strong interest in partiscipating in next play off, which is played for February.
BoylePoker are adding 2000euro to prizepool also champagne dinner for all players.

Five out of the 56 runners qualified through the Merrion league.
There is seven (at least) boardsters that I know of playing.

Great idea anyway Fintan, I was away so missed most of the qualifying events which I would have played in if I was here. Good luck with it anway, I'll definitely give the next ones a shot.

:D That makes us practically related... Now I see you're quoted at 25/1 and since you were out before Dinner break again on Thursday night I fancy your chances.... As you must be really hungry by now... Should be worth a punt.
    :D

Not too well Fintan, I bubbled for what must be the 4th or 5th time in that tourney. I've never actually cashed in it and I must've played it about 10 or 11 times. Pretty disastrous record. I think Collette Doherty and Dave Callaghan (no O) split it taking 7k or so each.
