Just saw a high definition via satellite demo at Armstrongs trade show. very impressive detail and colour. Basically its a set top box which connects to the HDMI socket on new Tv's. Movies looked Ok but it was sports which really showed up the difference, I guess the higher bit rate assigned to sports might account for this.

What channel was it broadcasting? If it was Canal+ HD or Astra HD test, they are pretty amazing, the sports look especially good because they were recorded with HiDef cameras, I have a Hidef 42" plasma in my shop with a HiDef Sat Reciever and the quality is astounding, its kinda hard explaining that when they get it home skys not gonna look like that though!

Oh, and it doesnt have to be HDMI, alot of TV's only have DVI inputs so alot of HiDef sat boxes will have both connections, you can also buy a DVI>HDMI connector too.

Will the sky box require a tv with HDCP support?

Its the canal + test I was watching. How did you manage to source a receiver? The guy from pace told me they were not available outside the test. Interesting point about DVI connections, is there any difference in quality between the two? I agree about the sport there was a definite difference in quality.

HDMI carries audio as well as the digital video, the video is identical in both.

It seems fairly certain at this stage that the Sky HD service will require HDCP on the DVI/HDMI device.

    Anyone got a Euro1080 box?

    Its a "Quali-tv" Euro1080 approved box (PDF)

ph is correct, the DVI will only deliver the Video, but the receiver has Fiber out to connect to a 5.1 receiver, it will display 1080i, Which looks amazing, I got it from Belgium and its on the Astra1 satellite. There are two test channels at the moment that are FTA, but Im trying to get a channel from belgium thats an actual full channel. It would be intresting to see familiar programs as aposed to wildlife and art shots. its a real head turner in the shop, but it makes the other LCD/Plasmas look terrible.......

Who thinks SKy will have it sorted in time for the world cup? the marketing writes itself!

Apparently the movie studios are pushing HDMI with HDCP as the de facto standard in order to limit the possibilty of piracy.

Not much point buying the QualtiTV box anyway as it's designed for MPEG2 HDTV reception. It looks as though Sky and all the other broadcasters will be using MPEG4.
