using non-http services behind a wireless router

    Hi
Recently got a Belkin modem/router which has wireless and 4 port ethernet. Can browse the web happily over wireless on my new laptop. Was trying to access a server to update some web pages but could neither telnet or ftp the machine. Moved ADSL cable from new modem/router to old USB modem and connected on my old computer. No problems.

I was thinking this might be a firewall issue: I disabled firewall on router, but still had Norton Internet Security on all the computers. And was still unable to FTP, but browsing okay.
I've not had any joy connecting the laptop via ethernet to check this. And old computer's network card doesn't appear to work. Was never used as there was nothing in the home to connect to. Have gone through the hoops of changing IP addresses on PC, router, etc. to no avail.

    Any thoughts?
    TIA
    -ao-

Open up the ports on the router.
    ie: forward ports 21, 23, 25.
Assuming you are using the default ports.
    Adjust them to fit.

    Thanks for the reply Fuzzy.

    Short answer: problem resolved.

Longer answer: I went back to check the settings of the router. Being slightly paranoid, I had locked down the router to just designated MAC addresses. In my haste a few weeks ago, I forgot to add my old PC's ethernet card MAC address and the laptop's ethernet MAC address. Which explains why neither of these worked. Added them tonight and hey presto! Internet access :D

I checked if I could use ftp and FileZilla from old PC which I could. Hmm. New PC: no joy, so it wasn't the router's firewall. Only other thing was the Norton Internet Security software. Older version on old PC, new PC and laptop have eval copy which I guess locks down a few more things, or else I had allowed the FTP net access on old PC sometime in the distant past.

So me's a happy bunny now, all my computers connected. Must add the Linux server next...
