I'm planning on writing a paper on this for college. i'm really interested to know how much people here spend.

please include all money spent on drinks, taxis, getting in to clubs, buying people drinks, etc. Basically "going out" money. and please discuss you opinions. Do you think people spend too much? is it too expensive? is it worth it?

i usually spend €100 on socializing, people deffo spend way too much on socializing, the problem is keeping track after a few pints, you find you have had enough pints, then someone suggests shots, and then maybe a few cocktails, and before you know it you're going to the atm for more cash, for the taxi fare home, im not too bad as im still inside dublin limits.

Im sure this thread has been done before, but im bored off my trolley.

    Each week it varies slightly.
Sometimes I head out of dublin for the weekend so works out a bit cheaper.
Between 100 and 150 euro each weekend for friday and saturday night.
Usually 50 on the friday and 100 on the saturday cause i tend to go out drinking earlier on the saturday.

Live near town and usually end up walking home so no taxi charges.
Dont usually go to clubs, stick to the late bars.

Whatever my broadband fee is.

Actually, I don't spend that much. Maybe around €25 or so, on going out, seeing a movie or whatever.

About 40 to 50 on a night out, would go out at least once, probably twice a week. Around €100, 5 grand a year pissed away!!!!

    Way too much!!
decided to quit all that just for a few weeks to try and pay off my car and some other stuff and it amazes me how much more moeny i have.
maybe i was bordering on alcoholism coz surely it can't be good or ghealthy to spend that much on booze!

Nothing major, prob in and about 100.

I don't drink usually, only maybe once a month, so that all goes on cinema, dinner out, cabs and the like. Amount flucuates wildly from week to week :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,518 ✭✭✭matrim

Probably in or around 100, although this is an average. Some weeks it could be 300 others about 20.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,809 ✭✭✭CerebralCortex

I am a student so I can't afford $150 a week  . Technically to cut a long story short I don't spend any money socialising, it seems if you drink you spend a lot more.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,367 ✭✭✭✭Sleepy

    WAAAY too much!!!!

If I go out Friday and Saturday night (which I would do at least three times a month), I'll easily get through about €250, so if I've done anything social at all during the week I'd have spent about €300 or so on my socialising for the week.

It really doesn't help when all my mates live in the city centre but I'm out in Deansgrange: a €25 cab ride away! :(

I would spend about €125 a week, but not in the student/my first few years in work way (on drink)...

    My week now resembles:
    €25 - round of golf
€20 - two trips to the gym
    Par 3 golf - €15
few pints with a friend or two - €25
Meal and a few drinks with my better half - €40

    Weeks can vary

Be it cinema or a big night out or no golf or gym at all.

As a student in College doing this study, you probably see socialising as 100% drink related (I was the same myself). For my lifestyle now however, drink is probably only 20% of my social costs. When you work for 4 or 5 years you really want quality from your social life, not just drunk on a Friday night followed by a jaded hangover on Saturday followed by the hair of the dog and getting up at 2 on Sunday and suddenly its Monday morning and your already back to square one, just waiting for Thursady/Friday night.....

Might be an interesting angle for your study........
Not just social spending, but the nature/evolution of social spending as your life changes. Saying that I'm still only 25 (even though the above details may make me sound like 45).

Depends whats on over the wkend. If its a b-day and i'm heading into town then anywhere from 100-300 for the whole wkend. If i'm taking it easy then about 50.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,230 ✭✭✭scojones

About 3 - 400 per week. If it's someone's birthday it could be alot more.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,124 ✭✭✭Jonny Arson

Varies alot but i'd never spend more than 75 a week on socialising.

Where are you 300 euro heads getting your money from? Mummy and Daddy me reckons!

If you ask me alot of people like to spin the "I spent 200 last night" more to look the man than anything. If you are sensible about it you can have a great night on two figures

    Gnerally for me its

Maybe 2-4 cans before I go out, we wont count that as a cost for this
8-10 drinks, mainly pints, in the nightclub
Tenner admission (depends where you go of course, lets just say a tenner)
    Food 6-10 quid
Taxi home, usually about a fiver if sharing

So, thats 40-50 worth of fiver per pint beer, 10 admission, and close on 15 for food and taxi, about 70 a night does me generally. I might drop 140 on a Friday and Saturday night, then do the cans/naggin thing to afford going out Sunday. If I stay off fcuking five quid shots and dont put 50 quid of coke up my nose every night I find Im less endebted. Basically thats why I have more money than alot of my mates- I dont do shots at the bar, never buy the likes of fat frogs and seldom buy coke. Benefits of this being you usually have a 50 handy when a concert goes on sale or whatever

Basically, most people who do the I spent 200 last night are wasting their money or talking bollix

I spend bout 200-300 at least two weekends a month and yup your right it's a serious waste, pssin my hard earned money up against a pub wall. this week i have been mostly eating noodles cause of the piss up i had the weekend before last. getting paid on friday and nearly all my wages are gone because of debts because of socialising waaaaayy too much and an expensive holiday.i'm now off the fags and i'm goin cutting down on the drink. can't keep living beyond my means. there's way too many young people in ireland spendin way to much money on goin out.

i hardly go out these days, due to ****ty work, no money etc. etc. giving up smoking should put some extra money in the going out jar

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,472 ✭✭✭AdMMM

I usually spend about €30 a night. I'm only a 2 minute walk from all the nightclubs in Waterford, although one night it took me 2 hours, so I don't need to put aside €15 for a taxi to and from the place. Would usually have a few cans before I go out and then I only need 5-6 pints to sort me out in the pub. I don't do shots or cocktails... just pints :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 342 ✭✭treefingers

im within walking range of clubland so its not too expensive. few cans at home, then maybe 6/7 pints. once or twice a week.

thats usually under 40 euro a night (3 euro pints down here in the real capital ;) ), so definately not more than 75/80 a week....

    €0.00 - I have no friends.
    LOL!!! :D

It varies. As people are saying there are lots of factors, like where you are going, how often you go out, how many people are with you, if there is a special event on. How much you can afford and what your sources of income are, is also important.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 207 ✭✭ibanez

Nothing because im ****ed if any publican is getting my hard earned.

TBH, what I find the most significant factor in what you spend on socialising is your relationship status. I always spend far less when I'm with someone as it's not always just going out on the lash with the lads. That said, what I save on the drink is usually just spent on the girl anyway so I'm always skint!

    It's called working.

2800 Macedonia Denars would be a pricey week - that works out at about €60 in direct conversion. To buy the same in Dublin would probably set you back €200, maybe more...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 248 ✭✭jamiecake

    night out, easily € 80/100

payday, good weekend! with cloths etc.... €300easy..

    scary isnt it??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 157 ✭✭Ooly

    on a good week i could easily spend 150 - 200

  • I don't understand how anyone could spend 200+ euro a week socialising, job or no job. That seems like a lot of money to me, you could go into town and get loads of clothes or whatever if you weren't gonna save it. I just hate spending loads on drink and having nothing to show for working!! Seems like such a waste. When I go out I spend less than 30 euro, I get the bus or walk there, a tenner for a taxi back and that leaves 20 euro for drinks (I never pay in anywhere). OK 20 euro is only 3 or 4 drinks but thats grand for me. If I want to get bollixed I just buy some cheap beer/wine/spirits from nearby off licence beforehand, share it with my flatmates or whoever and thats a cost of only a couple of euro each.

Is sooo easy to spend €200+ on going out, and if you enjoy it its money well spent! Why bother working and earning lots o' cash in the first place if you don't get to reep the benefits by blowing a couple of hundred notes on a good night out??? Why not just go on the dole. When I go out I like to go early with a bunch of mates for dinner with loads of booze and conversation, then cab to a pub, then cab to a club, then cab home, with plenty of over-priced, rainbowed coloured shots and cocktails..

who are all these people who spend $0.00???

    wtf do you do?

pyjama partys with pints of water?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 593 ✭✭✭Cathy

Well, I'm one of them. I don't drink, and I walk most places, because I'm a student. If I spend any money on a night out, it's getting some chips with my friends on the way home.

How much do you spend on socializing a week, well a hell of a lot?

I’d usually go of with my mates on Tuesday, to the pub socializing, and could spend up to 60 euro, I go out again at the weekend, and that could cast me up to 200 euro.
    On drinks alone.

My cost on Taxi’s would be about 60 euro, and clubs could be about 50 euro Depending on where I go.
So You Do the Math, cos i don't want to

I DON’T LIKE TO BE REMINDED OF THE COST OF GOING OUT in this country..
    :(

Strive to socialise naturally where you don't have to pay to talk to people. :D
