Does anyone know what the cheapest way to phone the uk is? I am just about to move house and there is no landline there so am I am trying to figure out which telecom company has the chepest line rental combined with the cheapest calls. Or alternatively, whether it would be cheaper just to use my mobile which is currently pay as you go but I could change to a contract? The whole thing is very confusing!!

UTV Talk calls are free to landlines in Ireland and the UK (for calls under an hour) after 6 in the evening and at weekends.

Try Telestunt. Calls to the U.K. are charged at local rates. Put this number in front of your U.K. number: 1890 943 123

Thanks for that.. I will mostly be calling 01 and 02 numbers in the UK. I have contacted Talk Talk to find out more from them. UTV talk is only available in Northern Ireland and I live in Dublin so that one is no good unfortunately. Any other suggestions anyone....??

BT include calls to UK 01 and 02 in their flat rate call packages .

Will you need off peak or on peak or both ?

I'd second Telestunt, it's saved us a small fortune calling family in the UK, Germany and France.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if there is no landline in the house then you have to get Eircom to install the line for you. After thats in then you can switch to whoever you want. I'm with UTV, Free Ireland and UK calls from 6p.m - 8a.m. and 6p.m. Friday - 8a.m. Monday. Works very well if you work regular hours (9 - 5)

I have to agree with the UTV recommendation. If you work normal hours (9 to 5) then all your PM calls throughout Ireland and the UK are free once kept under the hour.

My bills dropped from €50 per month approx to €5 per month

or get your line in, assuming you're getting internet access pay a one off charge of 1 euro to www.voipbuster.com, and then get unlimited free calls in uk and ireland 24 hours a day for as long as you want, ive been using it for weeks now, no problems with latest s/w and anyone ive spoken to that ive asked, reckon the quality is as good if not better than normal landlines...
also forgot to mention its free to
    Australia
    Austria
    Belgium
    Canada
    Czech Republic
    Denmark
    Finland
    France
    Germany
    Greece
    Hungary
    Luxembourg
    Netherlands
    Norway
    Portugal

Voipbuster is excellent for free calls to Ireland and the UK. I got one of the digiwbe metro packages so I no longer needed a landline and got free calls to UK and Ireland. I am in the UK now and ring Ireland all the time for free.

It stands for Voice Over Internet Protocol (IP), basically allows cheap or free phonecalls over the internet,

Popular examples of it would be Skype or Tesco Internet Phone, in Ireland examples include NTL Phone and Blueface

Its worth noting that if you have no landline Blueface offer a GoMobile option that means you pay to dial a dublin 01 number but then calls are charged at VOIP rates to wheveever your calling....eg America could be 2c a min.

Yes I'm aware this is a old thread :)

Try this for landlines. It seems to work in Ireland anyway.
