It was removed because there was a thread where people were getting reps for nothing went out of hand.

Ah, well they can just be locked, it survived for ages before that, right?

In general, no. Some will abuse it, others will whine, many will be pissed off, and it'll end up being abandoned again. That was, I believe, the second time such a system had been in place here.

In certain aspects, yes. For example, as has been said many time, such a system could be great in the FS boards, but only a modified version will work e.g. only people who have bought from the seller will be able to rate him. This would probably require something of an overhaul to the entire system though.

Its a retarded electronic penis measuring system.

tbh if you could only give one good or bad rep a week, then it might work.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 31,967 ✭✭✭✭Sarky

It was scrapped because many of the users were, not to put too fine a point on it, f*cktards who couldn't act in a mature way if their lives depended on it.

I didn't care for it myself.

It seemed like a pointless exercise in mutual masturbation tbh. Plus unless my memory is failing I seem to recall that a disproportionately high number of the 'highest repped people' seemed to be ladies, which leads me to suspect that a lot of the votes were being cast by cyberstalkers just looking for attention.

Why so angry? Is your retarded electronic penis too short? ;)

Seriously though, post counts work in much the same way. And I'm obviously not biased here, but if someone gets past 1000 posts without getting banned, they are in some way balanced, right?

I was only around for a bit of the "rep era" and it was a bit pointless. It would be a great system if people didn't abuse it.

It is possible to get banned after 1000 you know.

Take a look at the prison, a few 3000+ people were banned. Post count among other things is no exemption from any of the boards rules.

I liked the rep system. It made you try and make your posts as good as possible.

The rep system was removed before i became a regualr so my memories of it here are others, ive seen it go badly wrong on other forums though. Little cliques can develp of friends giving each other rep... bad news.

I know, I'm just saying that if in the course of 1000 posts, someone doesn't do something worthy of a permanent ban, it indicates that they are less likely to ever do something like that than someone with seventeen posts is. It's bigoted towards veteran users, but it makes sense as a general indicator of quality of character to other boards users.

My very first AH post was a thread castigating the rep system and it's faults. In it's (then) current guise it was detrimental to the community spirit of boards, lead to spam ("+rep me plz kthxbye" etc), stupid rep begging sigs and general BS...there are times it'd be nice to have it about, as a way to show appreciation for a particularly good post, but the cons outweigh the pros IMO.

I post at a small forum with a tigthly knit community and rep plays a big part in those messageboards....but even there it is abused, and it's recently been turned to comments only.

How long ago was that posted? And this isn't one of those rep giving threads or anything, its more like asking peoples opinions on whether they'd like it back, its not asking to get it back either

the rep system might work if it were fro subscribed users only ie. only subscribed users could give someone a good or bad mark, might also get some new subscribers

Its in the sticky above,I know what you are saying and all but I think you are contradicing yourself, it is a thread about rep system.

Anyway just putting you wide if the other sees it that way.

Its almost 50/50 to bringing back the rep system.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 641 ✭✭✭Dimitri

I've heard it can work well but is boards now too big for it? You could be a regular poster on boards and not ever see most of the other users.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,472 ✭✭✭AdMMM

I was one of those low lifes with a rep begging sig as I wasn't really that active on boards at the time of the rep system.

At times I would like to be able people rep for good posts and I definetly think it would be a good idea on the FS forums as a way of rating a seller/buyer however as already said, the cons outweigh the pros!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,001 ✭✭✭✭Flukey

It was a nice idea in principle but in reality it served no purpose. Most of those that did use it in any way just abused it. If you like or dislike a post you'll know it yourself. If you want others to know, you can just mention in a subsequent post in that thread.

    Its cold I swear!

Post count is pretty useless too. Ive seen some posters clock up hundreds of posts in their first week of frenzy.

If i see somone with a huge post count I would think they post alot of worthless spam. But thats just my opinion. Empty vessals etc. etc.

Reg date all the way baby.

Could be ok if there was an option to view it or not, like the way you can ignore signatures and avatars

Thats what we had before. trust me it doesn't help.

Post count is also not an indicator of if your a good poster or not. It just means you have surived a long time without getting banned. Last year I got hassle from a few people who seemed to think my post count was somehow making them look inferior so I had ecksor scramble it at the time (think its reset back now, not sure).

There used to be a post to day ratio on peoples accounts. But this just encouraged spamming.

Never actually used boards while the rep system was in place so dont miss it. Would be good for the For Sale forums though, as someone already suggested.

Never bring it back, it sucked.
