I'm considering upgrading to XP and I was looking on ebay, but it's difficult to tell what's legit and what's not.

Could someone give some pointers on how to get a legitimate XP (pro or home) licence cheaply?

I'd like to use ebay if I can. I have some spare cash in my paypal account.

    How cheap is cheap?

Komplett sell it (OEM) for €137 + shipping

home edition is €86 on komplett

Maybe I'm a cheapskate....but both of those options seem expensive. They're both OEM (and so require the purchase of some hardware with them) and need 10 euro shipping added.

khannie: try asking in work (If you work in a large company)
Most big places, especially tech companies buy more windows licenses than they need.
    ie-
IBM (for example) may buy 1000 licenses as a package deal frmo MS.
They might only have 950 computers. So they give some to employees.
Thats where I get mine. (not IBM, a similar place though.)

M8, iv got a few licenses here that i could sell to u. Generally thay have only been used 1-3 times but not really more than that. They are 100% legit and i probably have a few cd's here 2. They are stickers and have not even been peeled off yet, still on plastic :).

that's really no more legit then what you get on ebay then....

If you know anyone who works for MS, you can get it cheap, otherwise, OEM is the cheapest way to go.

Fuzzy: That's a great idea. I'll give that a bash on Friday.

Endurance man: Hit me with a figure there. ;)

I don't think I'll be paying 90 euro or anything like it for a new OEM licence. I have win2k pro, and it does me just fine for now. I reckon the price of 2nd hand XP licences will plummet when vista comes out anyway.

I'm not 100% sure it works like this but if you do go for an OEM license get it with a cheap easily tranferrable piece of hardware like a mouse or something silly like that. That way the license is "attached" to the mouse, so when you upgrade to a new machine you can use the same mouse and keep your XP license.

If you are waiting for WinFS and the rest of the stuff that was supposed to be in Longhorn then you'll have to wait much longer.

Are Microsoft not offering a program whereby if you bough what you thought was a legit copy of XP that turned out to be a fraudulent copy, you could send it in to them and they would replace it with a legit copy.

Yep, they are in the UK at least, I'm not sure if it applies here too. To avail of it though it has to be a 'proper' faked copy, the kind of one you'd get from a dodgy dealer with a vaguelt realistic looking cd and license cert. You can't just download it, install it and then go looking for your free copy :) You also have to report where you got it, so no printing out your own dodgy cert to send off to them either. I think it's more aimed at businesses who might have payed some dodgy IT company for a load of copies which they thought were ok at the time but they got ripped off.

yeah, but for everyone else who either bought what was an obviously fradulant copy (FCKGW...) or whatever they offerr a legit copy at a reduced price, there aim is to encourage people to use legit copies of software, and they understand that students, home users and other people with low incomes cannot afford full copies so they offer it to them.
