Can someon explain why "full-frame" is a big deal? Not being cheeky, just don't have a clue about this type of thing. My understanding is that the previous sensors were smaller than 35mm film (by a factor of 1.6) so fitting a 50mm lens on those sensors is the same effectively as an 80mm lens on a 35mm film SLR.
    Is that correct?

    [edit]
Actually it's explained quite well in the article (duh!)
    [/edit]

    Also there's rumours of a low-end DSLR (EOS 3000D: http://forums.photographyreview.com/showthread.php?t=13617) looks like a crippled version of a 300D.

Should at least bring prices down a bit.

You are correct. Whereas the current crop are down by a factor of 1.6, full frame is exactly the same as 35mm.

don't know if this will bring down prices - 5D is priced around $3.5K which makes it way out of reach for most consumers. Have seen some info on the 3000D but may be a fake. Would have thought Canon would have announced it at the same time. Also 3000D looks like a low end DSLR.

I don't really see the point in the 3000D as you can get better features from a prosumer Digital. I'd be guessing it's a fake too.

id say the low-end dslr market is covered with the 350D, another lower priced, lower functionality dslr would be pointless. The 5D looks promising with the full frame sensor, but only 3fps? pshaw!

I'd be keener on getting my hands on a 1Ds MK II (c'mon santa, dont let me down!) :)

It would have been better if they made the Canon EOS-1D Mark II N a full frame sensor...I don't think too many people will jump at the 5D considering you can get a secondhand Canon EOS-1Ds, 11 megapixels for the same price range...I would buy a secondhand Canon EOS-1Ds, much better spec camera.

I suppose people will wait for the 1Ds MKII N? :D

better spec's is only relevant to what you are shooting and what you do with the photos after you have taken them

DotOrg its all relavent, but a secondhand Canon EOS-1Ds is better value for money.

a secondhand Canon EOS-1Ds is better value for money
i shoot 90% of the time at 1600iso and above so for example, for me the 1Ds would be worthless for what i need from a camera

not everyone needs weather sealing, the 5D will have less noise at the higher iso's, it's smaller and lighter which may be a lot better for pros using it on a daily basis

so to me and lots of other photographers the 5D (with it's waranty which the 1Ds won't have) will be far better value for money

    but only 3fps? pshaw!

Yes but a 60 frame buffer for a full size jpg. WOW!

Also if you go the DPReview site follow the link to the sample pics on the Canon site. They are stunning. Zoom in and not a pixel in sight!

I called "she who must be obeyed" in to have a look at my new camera on the screen. I won't tell you what she said but I'd say it will be awhile before I get one frown.gif.

For the money I still would buy a secondhand Canon EOS-1Ds, noise ain't good at high iso, but not everyone shoots at these settings, and some people do need weather sealent like myself for landscape work...I think canons target price of the 5D is too high, it would be more desireable to if it were priced around 2500grand mark, at the end of the day its a full frame sensor camera stuffed into a slightly bigger body than 20d....
