In any combat sport if you are far surpassed by those you train with will you develop all elements of your game if you're constantly being schooled.

    BJJ Example:
Say you're a beginner training in a school with only purples, browns, blacks who always school you. Can you develop your game in a rounded way without someone of your level (or below your skill level) to try stuff on?

Do you need to be getting submissions to improve as a rounded athlete?

even in the example you gave you will progress as long as your team mates know how to train with progressive resistance and can let go of their ego/need to tap you out every time

Personally, I prefer fighting against higher grades where I`ve a very small chance of even scoring a point. I find it makes me work harder, find gaps, improve techniques(as opposed to using brute strength) and overall improve my game.

The problem that can arise from this is that some people can get disheartened. So I think a higher grade should not fight at 100% for the entire match, soley so the lower grade can work on certain aspects of their game, such as arm bars or combos into a choke etc.

I think that's fair enough if your sparring isn't always with ultra competitive, must win types.

    Kickboxing example:
The superior striker can always work elements like footwork even against a beginner and allow the other guy to get a few shots off.

That's why we spend time drilling, or doing conditional sparring.

It works both ways too. If a purple is only concerned with schooling the newbies they growth won't be a fast as if they're trying out new sweeps/subs/escapes etc.

Of course, all this is dependant on you wanting to improve as quickly as possible. You might just roll for the craic. Skill development being a nice bonus

    Cool answers lads,

So if the BJJ badass lets the beginner mount him and try that new armbar out and get it 90% meanwhile Mr. Badass can work their armbar escapes while the newbie works their armbar?

Yup, that way its a win:win. Think about it, any beginner attempting to get an armbar or most locks on you is going to find it very difficult due to fact you have trained for it for X amount of time. And as stated, system works great bar the ego-maniacs out there..

Actually as a "higher grade" inma I use the chance of sparring with newbies to practice the stuff I'm not good at ie. don't sink that easy rear naked chock but try to work the more difficult moves which you mightn't get away with one a person of your own level.
Thus you learn and gives newbies a chance to roll about.

I've trained with teh gotta win people and training at their level can be great (stamina, fitness) but ususally when it comes to sparring you just become cannon fodder...But now.....................NOW I AM THE CANNON AND I SEEK REVENGE......REVENEGE................
