    Hey all.

Something has really been bugging me recently. Before Windows media player 10 when you were ripping music the player put some kind of license data with the track. I play my music through winamp and spend a fair amount of time online updating my webpages, writing e-mails ect. When a 'protected' track plays in winamp the browser suddenly gets redirected to the windows media player site and gives you the option to download a license. This is beginning to be a major pain in the ass. I have lost e-mails ect that i was writing because of this redirection. Is there anyway of stopping this from happening? Even if it means getting a program to get rid of the copy protection. I have too much copied music to rip it all again btw.

    Comments very welcome. Thx, P.

You would have to remove the DRM from the tracks. This is the source of the problem.
To Remove DRM from legally purchased music:

First off, you need to download a few free programs: Windows Media Player (although I'm sure you've got this - it's bundled with every version of Windows since 98), the Nero Fast Burning Plugin (available from wmplugins.com), the BETA version of CDmage (from the cdmage website or mirrored here if you have trouble with the download) and an audio conversion program (Personally, I use coolsoft's Power MP3 WMA Converter - as good as free because the trial version still allows full conversion functionality without a time limit)

Once these are downloaded and installed, open your music with Windows Media Player, and choose to Burn a CD. Then, using the Nero plugin, burn to a CD Image. Open the CD Image (.nrg file) in CDmage, and extract the tracks as a Wave file. Then it's a simple matter of converting the Wave files to mp3 or your preferred format using your chosen converter.

This method will give you the highest possible quality through the conversion, and it won't cost you a blank CD as is suggested on a load of other sites.
There is reputedly a program called (Google for it) which will actually remove the copy protection parts from your DRM'd WMA/WMV files.

Alternatively, you could use Firefox as your browser with the TabBrowser Preferences extension and get each new link/referered link from external programs to open in a new tab. Thus you wouldn't lose data, and the MS License page would open in a new tab. *This is not a generic 'Use Firefox' answer

Thank you so much. I chose the second option which seemed easier and works perfectly.

    :) You rock!
