Do you have an ipod, or other mp3? If so, you can copy everything to that and paste to the new hd.

Otherwise, get some prog called MyPC or something. Not sure, but I've heard about it, supposed to be handy.

What kinda size you talking about?

If you have XP on the old PC you can use Files and Settings Transfer Wizard. Writing them to CD is just as quick as any other method.

get an ethernet card for a tenner, plug the cable into the laptop and home pc, 100mbps transfer - sit back and relax

you might even all ready have an ethernat card installed - check for like a big phone socket on the back of oyur home pc, your laptop deffo has one.

otherwise its just gonna have to be cd writing all the way...

If you want to go the network way; you will need a cross-over network cable or a hub. Stick with the CD mate. Less hassle. I presume you have a CD Writer in the old PC. Don't wipe the PC until you are sure everything is onto your laptop.

I've never used the wizard before, so i can't help you with that, but there are a number of settings which you will need to set.

IP: set it to 192.168.1.1(Desktop) and 192.168.1.2(Laptop), can be down through control panel, or right click on network and properties, and right click on Local area network, depends on OS
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0 on both machines
Network name: i.e. laptop and desktop
Workgroup: same on both i.e. home, right click on my computer and properties, computer name.
Login name: You may have to log on both machines with the same name i.e. Administrator, depending on the operating system.
Sharing: If sharing is enabled, right click on the c drive of both machines and select sharing, to set up full shares.

If all the above are ok, it should work.

/EDIT, when you say that you can see them connnected, can you see the computer name and c drive etc.?

right click on the folders you want to share and select "share this folder" in the properties menu. then click my computer on the laptop and click "my network places" and you should see the desktop there!
