Working in Brazil/China(shanghai)

Long story short, but for personal reasons I may need to go to either brazil
(one of the towns in bahia state) or china (shanghai) for about 10 months. So
Im trying to get a feel for how difficult it would be for me to work in either
of those locations. It'still only a possibility at this stage but i may be able to influence
the destination so it's worth my while finding out now if one location is significantly more
    hassle than the other.

If anyone has any knowledge/experience of working in these areas
Id very much appreciate your input.

Me: IT degree with 6 years experience, have worked as a barman, dont speak portuguese
or chinese/mandarin but have a decent natural ability with languages. If necessary I'll
    do a TEFL etc course.

Brazil: the crime scare-stories etc dont really faze me, Ive heard a tourist visa will
get you 180 days but thats very hard to extend. Proper working visas are supposed to be
quite difficult to obtain, unemployment is high at ~18%. Tech industry seems healthy but
obviously my lack of portuguese is a significant problem. Most people who end up teaching
english seem to do so illegaly on tourist visas.. hmm..

Shanghai: well seeing as china is supposed to be a dominant economy of the future, I guess
I may have a chance with a western company who would like to have some people work in their
office there - wouldnt have to be an IT job - any kind of office type work would
appeal I guess. Seems to be plenty of TEFL style work altho it doesnt seem that pleasant.

So if any has any advice/resources etc.. cheers.
