This fan is driving me insane, and I've only got the board a day or two. I tried disconnecting it, but the heatsink got so hot that I couldn't keep my finger on it for more than a second. What quiet fans would you recommend? I don't trust myself to remove the heatsink, so passive coolers are out.

    Thanks

    What motherboard do you have?

I feel your pain dude, really.
You'd honestly think these manufacturers were deaf.
tbh if I want something that loud and annoying I'll leave a hair-dryer on beside me all day.

lucky me, I'm getting away with having unplugged my NB fan ;)

I had trouble with a noisy 9800 pro fan. Turned out it was a dodgy fan. If you're going to replace the fan anyway, give it a squirt of wd40 and see if that sorts it out, but only do this before you were about to head to the computer shop. ;)

On my old NF7-S 2.0 board (nforce 2) I replaced the noisy bastard of a northbridge fan with a passive zalman heatsink that I got off hitide. It did the trick, pity about all the other ultra noisy stuff I had in that PC :)
I know you don't want to do this but it is easy enough. Although, I did have to take the motherboard out of the case in order to release the clips on the underside of the motherboard that were holding the old fan in.

Yeah, I was gonna suggest what stephen said too but didn't because of what you had said. It's really not that hard. If you're gonna do it, maybe try it on an old graphics card first to build up your confidence. The key is "less is more" with thermal paste. Also make sure you use arctic silver 5 (it's not electrically concductive AFAIK).

There's a great guide on the arctic site too.

    GL!
