Having just started playing poker, a friends dad leant me Super System. I found it to be way too complicated and not being familiar with the terminology of the game, I was surprised that Brunson had his nuts on the table so often :D

I downloaded a copy of Phil Hellmuths Texas Hold'em, thinking it might be a worthwhile read. Unfortunately it seems that Hellmuth prefers to tell war stories and inflate his own ego, than give good instruction. (Maybe that's too advanced for me as well)

Has anyone got any suggestions for a decent book or books? I've been playing only online for about 2 months, primarily funny money and freerolls. I know that I'll never learn anything unless I put my hand in my pocket, but to deposit at this stage seems like a waste of money.

My weaknesses are plenty but I feel my biggest problem is playing too tight but having no idea when to loosen. Any help appreciated

    Forget about Hellmuth's books.

Get Harrington on Hold'em for a good grounding in tournament play.

For a beginner i'd suggest Small stakes holdem by Lee Jones. It's written for limit poker but it's a good intro to the more important concepts, so it works well for most types of poker. Once you understand the concepts there then possibly The theory of poker by Sklnansky is the next step imo.

I somehow doubt that you are too tight. You are probably tight compared to the other play money players but that's not tight.
