got a free laptop

    ok i got a free laptop bog standard
    pentium 1
    4MB ram
    40GB hdd
    dlink wireless nic
    windows 95

    all ill be using this for is firefox and msn NOTHING else what Os would do best
    win 95 or a basic linux distro??????????? ive ran win9 fairly well with a desktop of this spec before so thats an option too what should i do?????

    Jebus - could you imagine compiling glibc or gcc on that machine?

    Win95 needs a minimum of 4MB just to boot, but needs 8MB for 'the microsoft network' so I'd assume you'll need 8MB for IE3. Firefox needs a minimum of 64MB ram according to its product page.

    You could try Debian or Slackware linux running IceWM or some other low resources desktop. Not sure what you could do about the web browser though...

    what type memory does it use, i have a few 66mhz sticks here

    how did you get a 40gig laptop hard drive for free???, thats worth about e60

    You sure? a 40Gb hdd and a pentuim 1>? have an old P2 and its got 128mb RAM and the 6.4Gb hdd its all it can take (well according to the manual) - must try put a 20gb in it:D

    Windows 3.1 or DOS....thats about all it will take.

    You could try a very ol version of slackware with a console install and forget about a gui. i think the old kernels were much smaller though , so less ram is used up by it, you migh be able to get some gui running

    windows 95 will run on 4mb ... but networking (tcp/ip) needs 6mb....

    just got it turns out its gt 16MB ram but the bad thing now is it ccame without charger :(
