just a quick question to settle a little wager..
before the backdoor system was brought into hurling, does anyone remember, was there a time when both hurling semi-finals were playing in croke park.. on the same day?
(ulster vrs munster + leinster vrs connacht)

galway and antim were almost certs to make it to the semi's every single year

Yep they were. The football ones were always on different days IIRC. Though it wasn't always Ulster vs. Munster and Leinster Vs. Connacht, cos Tipp met Antrim in the final one year.

Yes, they were often both played on the same day. I was often at an All-Ireland Senior Hurling Semi-final double header in Croke Park.

That was in 1989. Antrim beat Offaly in one semi-final and Tippeary beat Galway in the other, both on the same day. I was there. The Antrim win was a shock. Galway and Tipperary, a repeat of the 1988 final, was the big game of the day. There was also some controversy around one of the Galway players, Tony Keady. Between all that the second match was the big talk of the day.

It was taken for granted that Offaly would beat Antrim. There was hardly a word in the papers that morning about the game. It was all Galway and Tipperary in them. Offaly started well streaking into a big lead and it looked like things were going to go according to the script. But Antrim came back and in a dramatic match they ended up winning by about 8 points. Croke Park was buzzing after an unexpected result and exciting match.

Tipperary won the other semi-final and in a disappointing final, they beat Antrim easily. It was the final of the 18s. It was Tipperary's first win in 18 years. They won by 18 points. Antrim scored a total of 18 points and Tipperary's Nicholas English scored a total of 18 points. The final score was Tipperary 4 - 24 Antrim 3 - 9. I was at that too.
