AIB Maestro card

AFAIK this is the first year, it is likely that the recent name change prompted AIB to rexame their debit card "strategy".

But why bother with a debit card? just get the mastercard thing that will do for ordering stuff on hte web (which I assume is the goal)

I have a student account with a laser card (it has maestro written on it). Only got it a few months ago. Dunno if BOI do the same for students. Like the last guy said, you can't order **** all on the web with a debit card.

I don't see the point of having a debit card when you can have a credit card

The credit card is so much better, every country, every currency, ordering on web.
the only plus the debit card has is you can use it in Lidl/Aldi and the Govt tax is lower
    am I missing something

I was just looking at the AIB site and see that they now offer a Maestro card (debit card) to their student account holders. (the irish-only laser brand name is being axed in favour of maestro)

Is this the first year, do BOI offer the same? does anyone have the card yet?
I've had a maestro card for the last two years as a student, though that was with Ulster Bank, suprising that AIB only do that now.

And as for advantages, debit means no interest to pay off unless you have a credit card as it comes straight out of your main bank account instead of putting you in debt you might forget to pay off, spending within your means and all that.

Again, ringing your bank will probably answer all of your questions. A lot more accurately then we can tell you.

Not nessecarily. If only some of the Irish banks would adapt Visa debit cards we would be laughing. Accepted everywhere Visa credit cards are. Maestro is a bit more tricky.

You can't get into debt????? That would be the obvious reason for me having a laser over a credit card. Not being able to buy online is a kick in the balls, but that's what my dad's credit card is for!

Can you use an AIB Maestro card to buy online though? I was trying to buy stuff off both amazon.co.uk and play.com, but even though both claim to accept Maestro they both told me there was a problem with my card details (I definitely entered them right).

Can you only use British-issued Maestro cards on these sites? I seem to remember reading somewhere that you need to ask your bank to set up your card for online use, is this true? I should probably ring the bank but it's not open till Monday...

Has anyone heard anything about the new Maestro charges. now that Laser cards are being done away with. I'v heard that it's going to be a % of the transaction instead of a standard fee.

This thread is 6 years old! But AFAIK AIB still use the maestro/laser card which can't be used to buy stuff online from other countries! AIB give students a mc2 mastercard if requested :)

Get an Ulster Bank Visa debit card with a student account, works on every site online and worked pretty much everywhere I've tried it abroad. Most pepople I know with laser cards have changed banks, or are trying to so they can get a Visa
