I have 2 computers with the exact same problem the floppy drive doesnt work on either of them. I've tryed various combinations with cable and bios settings to no avail.
THe light comes on on the drive and the icon comes up in my computer
But when i duble click it it just say insert disk. It doesnt make any those normal noises though but the disk does spin
one has a Epox the one motherboard and the other is an msi kn8 plat
    both have phoenix award bios
It prob something supid but i'm out of ideas

Ha ha ha ... you said 'floopy'

    ...

Could it possibly be the disks themselves that are the problem and not the drives?

Oh and can you not avoid using floppy disks entirely and use disgo keys or cdrw's or some other storage instead? Floppies are probably the least useful/reliable form of storage available.

Could be the floppy controller on the mobo? How about trying an external (USB based) floppy drive? You should pick one up for about 39 quid.

The drive is broken not the Mobo, get a new floopy drive about €1 or thereabouts.

some floppy drives have the cable keyed to go in only one way, and often it can be the wrong way with other cables, so try cut the notch off the cable that stops it going in the other way, and plug it in the other way.

If the cable is in the wrong way, the LED usually stays on all the time. Its most often drives taken from oem machines (pacbell/dell/gateway) that have their drives keyed the other way.
