Yes find out what keys are damaged and repair them from either the XP cd (which could be bad as they are older and no Sp2)

Send your pc back in time(system restore) to when all was well, you wont lose any files just settings that have been changed since that Restore Date.

Thats the one there, System restore will work if you know when the virus killed your associations.

Tried this but still no joy

    Came up with

Cannot find the files associated with rstrui.exe to run it when I did system restore

Also changed the default to "%1 %* and then changed the default to exefile
exited the regedit and rebooted and still no joy

when i do open a box(windows like) comes up, which never id before with goobled gook and the only option is to press ok
    did come up with C:windows\system32\mui\0406\xpsp2res.dll

Bloody icons on my desktop are all fecked up and lost for swear words at this stage

    Format C:/s

Seriously take off what you need via copying and pasting to Nero (cheat insert a blank disc and let Smart Start run Nero.

if you have a 2nd HD or portable HD copy over what files you need and format and reinstall windows.

FIXREG.COM is not an .exe, it's a .com filetype ,it runs an ms-dos application. but your probaly as well to format, start off with a nice clean install, goodluck!!!

fixreg does not work nothing happens windows needs to know what file created this

Looks like wiping it is my only option

How can i do this in safe mode as I am not sure any other way

Mate might have a look at pc as feck knows whats gone wrong with it as have all the latest virus & firewall software??

ok, it sounds like a problem with one of your eviromental variables...

right click 'my computer' >>properties >>advanced >>enviromental variables.

In the system variables box you should see a variable called path.

click edit... In xp or 2000 it shoud read soething like: C:\Windows\System32\;C:\Windows\;C:\Windows\System32\Wbem

Give that quick fix a try before wiping the whole thing...

(if it works you'll be able to run *.exe files straight away)

    =============================================

asuming your running xp you should then run chkdsk to check your partition integrity.

get avg and spybot too and while you're at it, switch to firefox ;)

still having problems? google for fix mbr.

If all that didn't work THEN wipe the machine :p

Check the link posted above with exefile in it , it has the virus name and defintion that did this, its a registry problem.

what about msconfig, the virus might show up in start-up or try a selective or diagnostic start-up. have you tried system restore from here.

    %SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI Control Panel

is this ok or do I need to change it ?

that is the same on my pc. but i have no probs with .exe

Click Start, Run and type Command
Type the following and then press Enter after typing each one:
    cd\windows
    regedit
Navigate to and select the following key:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ exefile \ shell \ open \ command

Double-click the (Default) value in the right pane
Delete the current value data, and then type:
    "%1" %* [with quotes]

    (ie., quote-percent-one-quote-space-percent-asterisk.)

    Navigate to:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe

In the right-pane, set (default) to exefile
    Exit the Registry Editor.
If you're unable to launch Regedit.exe even from Command Prompt, try this:

    copy regedit.exe regedit.com
    regedit.com
