bud.....If you want to seriously record you are going to want to get a decent sound card, a little mixing desk and a program. I have a few i could give you if you want but you wont get decent results by plugging straight into your line in or whatever. If thats what you want you need a mini jack to jack connection i presume

You'll need at least a preamp for recording. You won't get a good enough or strong enough signal from the guitar on it's own. After that, you just need a 3.5mm to 6.5mm stereo cable.

A PA or a pre amp? Maplins, random guitar shops, audio shops, electronic shops...

If you're just starting off and on a tight budget you can get by with a few basic purchases. You can plug your guitar directly into the soundcard with your guitar lead and a little 6.5 mm-3.5mm adapter available from loads of music and electronic shops. You'll need software. Cubase LE or something like that might be good, you can get it fairly cheap, sometimes even free with magazines and stuff AFAIK.

Obviously you'll need more stuff to give you more flexibility and quality but thats all you really need to get started.

You shouldn't need a preamp if you're plugging your amp into your pc though.

You cannot plug your guitar in directly and respect decent results. There is not enough output from a guitar.

And if you're not careful, could seriously damage your sound card.

I dunno. I just plug my electric guitar straight in and sweeten it with amplitube or something. My semielectric has a 9v preamp and there's not a massive difference in quality.

I know its hardly professional but its a start.

I've always run my guitar through a preamp, Zoom, Boss, Microcube even, just to get the level's up.

I've tried running a line from the emulated line out/headphone socket on my Marshall MG100DFX into the soundcard but it always sounds like crackly sh*te, any idea why that could be? It sounds fine through headphones!

Cos the MG100DFX sucks the balls of a thousand flea infested camels? That or your input level is too high.

sounds like you're going into the 'mic in' instead of 'line in' on your soundcard. mic and line levels are completely different. you also shouldnt plug the guitar straight in, there's something just wrong about that.

    here....

    Just get

A preamp( Zoom 707, Digitech, Boss ME 8) whatever. Thats up to you
A Mini jack - Jack lead( get them anywhere)
A program for recording. Wont matter for starting really, (Cubase SE, Cakewalk)
Go into the line of your computer

The way I get around the whole needing-a-preamp-but-being-too-broke-&-ignorant-to-get-one problem is I mic up the guitar, run that through the mic in on an old hifi, then link it up to the pc with a guitar lead & two jack>minijack adapters from headphone out on the hifi to mic in on the pc (they're only 2.50 or so, really useful but I lose more of those than plectrums). Not brilliant quality but far better than plugging directly in - essentially it's using the preamp in the hifi itself. Could be just the ticket if you've a suitable system, really handy for keeping record of stuff you write, where quality doesn't really matter.
