A privately maintained computer network that can be accessed only by authorized persons, especially members or employees of the organization that owns it.

Basically, set up a private subnet range and block all incoming access to it from the outside, and there you go. Commonly, there may also be a webserver (such as Apache or IIS) running on this range to provide internet-like browsing capabilities on its hosted pages.

"intranet" isn't a type of software. Its just a network that is run within a company. A home "lan" between two or more computers is an intranet configuration.
