as far as I know, the max ram you can get in one chip is 512, so if you wanted a gig you would have to have 2x512

    Eh no,

Here's the ram you need - http://www.komplett.ie/k/memselect.asp?cmd=getModelPartList&strMfr=Dell&strProdLine=Dimension+XPS+Series&strModel=Dimension+XPS+Generation+3 . To take advantage of the dual channel you should install it in identical pairs. ie if you want 1024 install 2 x 512. Or you could buy one gig chip, and later ass a seccond.

Don't know much about games but that computer looks to be a pretty good spec.

in the dell pc theres 2 256mb
is it better having 2 512mb
or having a 2 256 and a 512mb and is there room in the pc for it

or should i go for the 1 gb

go straight for a single 1gb chip. Then you have room to upgrade in the future, and you will need to upgrade. 512mb of ram is really scraping the bottom of the barrel nowadays, especially if you want to play games.

If you buy a 1GB chip you will loose dual channel? I have no idea what perfomance hit you will take, but why not go for the 2x 512? 1.5 GB of Ram should be enough for a long time into the future.

if i were you i'd go for the 1gig stick of ram. simply because later (when you've more money) youll be able to get a 2nd 1gig stick and run it in dual channell, it'l lbe an easier upgrade and you won't have as much hassle as you'll only have to sell the 2x256 that are in the machine now.

The perfomance boost from dual channel isn't worth it. Get a single 1 gig stick now, and then later (when you need the extra ram, and you will) you can get your extra gig AND get your dual channel boost. Don't bother with 2x256 and a 1gig, or 2x152's and an empty slot.

    Maaaybe...
FEAR will be very demanding, and it needs lots of quality RAM. Not sure about Pentium performance; if you want a gamer's PC, I would've recommended an AMD-based system; but oh well, bit late now, eh?
I suppose if you run it at high and not maximum, you'll get on fine.

One note though: seriously consider getting broadband, if you plan on multiplayer!
