I love my 20" G4 iLamp, and was frustrated at the apparent lack of upgradability, Apple reckon that you can only put 512mb in the internal (not officially user-servicable) and 512MB in the user slot, which means that if you got one shipped with 256mb (as I did), then your RAM maxes out at 768mb. Now for daft boast; tried a PC400 1Gb Dimm in the internal slot, and the largest official SO-DIMM in the user slot, 512mb, and it works! 1.5GB of RAM in my iMac G4.
Had a look around the internet, and most sites/tech reviews still claim the 1GB max. Only mactracker differs, turns out I could have had a 1GB SO-DIMM too (if I was prepared to pay for it).
Hopefully now video work won't drag so badly..

when you remove the base and access the logic board (where the non-user ram is) you break a cooling seal. Make sure that you use some silicon type sealant when putting it back together or you may have an over heating mac on your hands.

Yeah I know, third time I've opened her up; I've replaced (in separate forrays into the base) the DVD (with a 16x DVD+-RW) and the HDD (with an 8mb cache 180GB 7200), and all three times I used Artic Silver termal transfer fluid..
And who says iMacs aren't expandable, huh?

So, do I own the fastest G4 iMac in the world?? :->
Next step, overclock by de-soldering those resistors..
