    Hi Guys,

I can avail of a special offer that my company and Apple are running. Apple are providing staff with up to 20% discount on Apple goods. The iMac G5 has really grabbed my attention. It looks amazing. The most affordable spec available is an iMac G5 17" 1.8Ghz / 512mb / 160Gb HD / 128mb Radeon / Combo DVD RW all for E1240.25 including VAT and delivery. Its next day deliver, by the way.

Does that price and spec sound good? I could also get a Mac Mini for £506.99. (1.25ghz / 256mb / 40GB)

now i have never really touched on Mac's myself, but i am into macromedia and flash design and development. I would defo be looking at Mac's for the future, maybe when i finish college and have some spare cash...but is this offer too good to refuse? would you turn it down?

That doesn't sound like much of a discount. The standard price of that iMac on the Apple website is €1319. The standard Mac Mini price is €539.

Obviously a small discount is better than none, but that offer certainly wouldn't turn my head if I wasn't in the market for a Mac. :)

    Teeth.

I got my iMac via a friend who had a workplace discount, so I know the temptation you feel! Think about this deal another way, it's only cheap if you have to get it anyway discount or no discount. If you are not wanting one just now, it won't be really a saving, and when you do want to buy, better spec will be there for you ie 2.5Ghz chip, more memory and RAM.

If it's idle curiousity and you want to try Apple out, get the Mac Mini and run your old keyboard, screen and mouse off it. If you don't like it, it's small enough that it won't clutter up your desk and it's there if needed. The G4 chip is underpowered in today's terms but still nifty enough given a little extra Megs to run with.

^^ your bang on the money there mate!

I will probably put the offer on hold as i could spend about E300 on my current pc and give it a good upgrade.

the G4 chip, thats 34bit processing is it?

You mention that you're in college? If so, you're eligible to use Apple's educational store, which will give about the same discount as you'd be getting now, without the time restriction.

Apple Education would give you a better discount.

It is 32 bit man, but with some Apple Mac magic, a decent graphics card and a good RAM spec, it makes for a pretty nifty unit so your effectily looking at maybe 2Ghz Intel/AMD performance wise. The G 5 start now at about 1.7Ghz 64 bit dual core so it's over twice as fast for the entry mac, not allowing for tricks and the like.

Your best off trying the Apple Education shop if you qualify for it as it's always there price wise. But if you have more Q's, we are always about to advise you what you can go for. :)
