String Bet

In the British open last night one of the inexperienced players who wanted to raise did not say "raise", he put his chips over the line stack by stack. The commentator said this was a string bet. But later when he said raise it was a normal raise.

    Whats it all about?

Unless you move all your chips you intend to raise with in one go, over the line, you have to announce that you want to raise. If you announce, you can put stacks over one by one. But if you do so without announcing, the first stack that crosses the line is considered your action.

Can't remember but he only had a months experience, his biggest win was about £20.

you might have noticed a bit after he said raise. just "raise" (no amount) and then started putting chips in over the line, stack after stack.

this is allowed in some places but not the merrion or fitz, where it would just be taken as a minimum raise or what ever crossed the line first

it's always easier to just say what you are going to do before you touch your chips anyho

i wouldnt mind string bets being allowed or dissalowed but they shouldnt vary from tournament to tournament in the same casino. i went to a freeroll recently in the mayfair a player non verbally re-raised by just throwing in a big 500chip. the dealer just said "raise to 500". ok it wasnt exactly a string bet but it was a non declared but intended raise with a 500chip that was allowed to stand.
so a few days later i go to the mayfair €30 freezeout and when someone tried a non verbal x3 string bet re-raise the dealer put a stop to it and declared it just a call. the dealer went a little overboard explaining this to the player to such an extent that the floor manager told him " ok thats enough i think he gets the message". so by the looks of it depending on the improtance of the tournament rules are tightened or loosened.

Anyone successfuly bluffed using the protection of this rule.
Sneaky and dangerous (relying on the dealer to call string bet)
    Unethical too?
