so if I just have RTE1, RTE2, TV3 and TG4 available on my tv, will this do anything for me?

You should be able to pick a load of free to air digital TV channels. As far as i know, you'll get BBC, C4, UTV, and loads more. There's also a load of ****ty shopping channels

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 145 ✭✭Chavster

and a load of european channels which have refreshing views on nudity in programmes :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,661 ✭✭✭savemejebus

you will not get C4 or UTV or Channel 5. You'll get the bbc channels alright though.

Anyone notice how lidl's price breakdowns now include the enviromental recycling cost

Hmmmmm, and what would the reception be like on them then? Would I also be able to pick up RTE etc as my current thingy can't pick them up clearly.

It's not really worth it for me anyway, don't watch tv at all :o

You cannot pick up RTE on satellite, unless you take out a subscription from Sky with a minimum of the Family Package (correct me if I'm wrong someone!)

You're not wrong, RTE is only available thru a SKY sub.
However ITV3, True Movies, Classic FM TV, Men & Motors and quite a few dedicated news and old film channels are all free to air.
So for less than €100 it will extend your viewing choice.

Yes, its available on freeview. However freeview is *NOT* a satellite service- its the new terrestial digital service in the UK- available with an aerial and a dba digital set-top decoder. So no- its not a Freesat channel, you need a minimum of the family package from Sky to receive it. Hope this helps,

    S.

i got that system a while back altough the only thing i use it from it now is the dish itself...ive since added a motor to it and replaced the reciever.

the wall mounting bracket you get with it is useless so id recommend buying a seperate ultra strong one. and the things i found FTA to be good for was for the following channels.

    BBC
    ITV3
    Reality TV
All the radio channels you get.

Motors TV used to be FTA before joing sky package

all the indian channels as im of indian background.

I don't suppose these freeview transmissions are broadcast from the northern Ireland transmitters?

They are, and many people near the border receive them. Not all trasmitters transmit digital (yet) so it depends on your location.

Anyone know can you get tv5?

Along with being on Hotbird, its also on Astra.
Its not Free-to-air though, you need a minimum of the Family Package to decode it.
There is talk of it going Free-to-air at some stage.

If you are the experimental type, its also on Atlanticsat at 8 degrees west, at some distant point on the horizon. A French friend managed to pick it up (with a 2m dish.....)

Hey S: Have a look here Hotbird 6 . This says it's FTA and the last time I was on Hotbird (not too long ago) I thought I watched it. Maybe not! Perhaps the guys on the Satellite forum can help Shredded out. :)

    .
I have the family pack and cant get it. I used to get it on the old analogue system but no luck with it on Sky digital.

Maybe there's something I dont know or am not doing right and if this is the case I would welcome any advise on how to get Channell 5 as there is the odd good movie on and there used to be football but not sure if that is still the case.

Channel 5 is actually on Freesat- you do not need the Family Package for it.
Its not available in Ireland though- if you want it, you have to lie through your teeth, turn on "hide own number send" on your mobile when calling Sky to activate your card, and pretend you're in Liverpool, or somewhere......

Nope- Freeview is terrestial digital TV, not satellite tv.
The update relates to those who have an aerial and are capable of pulling in a digital signal from the North or Wales. It has no bearing whatsoever on receiving digital satellite signals. a 60cm dish should do you fine for Carlow.

i think so,there is a broadband service that uses hotbird, hotbird is on the same line as astra, check out this link,cpsat.co.uk,they have all the info you need

I dont spose it would work as a satellite for broadband access by any chance ?

I dont understand, will i be able to recieve all the channels on the hotbird 6 sat? is there a list somewhere of what can be recieved with this dish? what is the best sat to point this dish at?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 496 ✭✭hansov

Hey DJDave: Have a look at my previous post. If you point the dish at Hotbird they are the channels (clearly marked on that site as unencrypted/FTA) you get. You will not be able to decrypt encrypted channels with this box. Might be best to read the thread from the beginning. It has got slightly OT with freeview, broadband etc. This is a satellite receiver package for receiving TV and radio from satellites in space. This equipment does not get you broadband/digital TV/freeview etc.

BBC 1 / 2 / 3 / 4, BID TV, Bloomberg, CNN, ITV News are quoted as available on the booklet that is being handed out in the shops. Would this be correct?

Sorry now if this sounds dumb but this system comes with a "Signal meter for optical and acoustic orientation of the antenna" do I need to get the Sat Finder Set to set the dish up ? Obviously the Sat finder set does what it says on the tin but does the Signal meter do the same thing ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 122 ✭✭denhamd2

I know this sounds like a dumb question but do I have to put the dish on my roof? Can it be kept indoors? Will the fact that its on the roof of a bungalow affect picture quality? I dont know a great deal about satellite, if it can get Hot Bird 6 does that mean it can receive all those channels on that page?: http://www.lyngsat.com/hb6.html. Also anyone know if it can receive Art Sports or Canal +?

Finding the satellite is one thing- but if there is a tree in the way the signal might be dire esp in heavy rain. You need a clear line of sight to ensure a decent signal- the signal meter is measuring this. A dirty signal- that is a signal of less than 100% is degraded by "noise" which is the static. Mostly the systems can compensate for a certain level of noise, but if it rises above a certain level you will experience sound out of sync, blockulation of the picture, freezing of the picture or in bad cases no output to the television whatsoever.

Does anyone know what channels it can receive? Eurosport UK, Channel 5, Canal +, BBC 3, etc??? Do I need any other parts or is it all included in the box?

The dish does not have to be on the roof of your house, but it does need a clear line of sight with the satellite. Hence- you might get a signal pointing it out a window, then again you might not. Putting it in the attic would be a no-no. The side wall is what most of us use- I've seen a few chimneys pulled down in high wind with dishes on them!

Re: Hotbird6 - it can receive those channels listed as Free-to-Air, you may require an additional decoder for some of the channels or a subscription.

k, so say for instance Eurotic TV has an 'F' beside it, is it free to view around Europe or just in Austria (where the 'F' links to)? Does the 'F mean Free to Air? This channel is for arguments sake of course!

If its Free-to-Air in Austria, short of controlling access fullstop, with something along the lines of the regionalised Sky Free-to-Air cards, there is no reason why it would work in Austria and not elsewhere. So, yes is the answer. I don't know Eurotic TV, but see no reason it wouldn't be Free-To-Air for all.

Is there some sort of idiots guide to setting this up?

What's the best Satellite to point at for everyday programs and films in English ?

I had a look at the Hot Bird 6 link and it doesn't look great to be honest.

I got this for my parents and hope to set it up next week, so any pointers etc would be great.

Is there a more appropriate forum to ask these questions in and if so maybe we should set up a help/faq thread ?

I helped my mate set his up the other night.
Channels are preprogrammed in to it. So as you flick through the channels it shows you what satellite you would need to be pointing to in order to receive that channel.
Channels that were set up for Astra 1b, which is what we were pointing at were
BBC1,2,3,4,reality tv+1,cbeebes(spel?),the vault and the chart show(2 music channels). There were a few inidian channels also.

I'm not sure what the set up with the 'satellite beeper' that comes with the dish as you would need some sort of connectors to join with the rest of the cabling. We found the satellite but looking SE and angling almost level to the horizon, a little up and down and hey presto picked up signal.
